Navajos could be swing factor in Ariz., N.M.
By LEONIE SHERMAN
Special to the Sun
10/31/2004

....In hopes of currying voter favor, both President Bush and Democratic candidate John Kerry this year have made visits to the Navajo Nation, which is geographically the size of France and spread out over the states of Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. The Navajo Nation Tribal Council has endorsed Kerry for president.

A swell of ballots cast by Navajo voters has decided elections before, and many hope that they can do so again on Nov. 2.

"Janet Napolitano is governor of the state of Arizona because Navajos turned out to vote for her," according to Deena Jackson, spokeswoman for the President of the Navajo Nation. "Janet was losing the governor's election a couple of years ago until the Navajo vote came in. So nobody can tell me that the Navajo vote doesn't count." Jackson says that Governor Napolitano's success rested on the fact that "she wanted to sit down at the table with Natives," and she says, "We believe John Kerry will show that same dedication."

With 95 percent of Navajo voters registered Democratic, a large Navajo turnout could translate into a boost for the Kerry campaign on election day, and it's toward that end that Democratic Party and Navajo elections officials have been pushing a get-out-the-vote campaign that appears more energetic and widespread than any in history....

2. Nota Bene: Navajo were "swing factor" in Red Sox win
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 10:17 AM by SpiralHawk
A Navajo Medicine Man from Albuquerque, NM, blessed the Red Sox with corn pollen early in the 2004 season, and then again when they were down 0-3 to the Yankees in the ALCS. The Sox went on to win 8 straight games and the World Series.

So it would be altogether -- Twilight Zonish -- if the Navajo voters also wind up playing a key role in the election, boosting Boston's other native son, John F. Kerry, into the Presidency.

Now that I think about it, I rememeber that Kerry was out in Navajo territory back in August, and did receive a Blessing Way at some doings near Gallup, NM. In a sacred manner, like so, hey, was the Blessing Way offered.

7. Thanks for the welcome :-)
Us Navajos turned around WW2, and we'll turn around the results in Az!
Bush is not compassionate.. He isn't capable of being compassionate. Kerry has a lot of respect for us native people, and will right the wrongs that Bush has commited agains us, and the rest of the nation..

4. Just like the African Americans
Most minorities are strongly in support of the Democratic party. Very few tribes have ANYTHING to gain from the GOP, and their turnout makes or breaks Western state's voting totals.

6. the Beauty Way
is the way of the Navaho. They understand that Kerry respects their beliefs by his actions with the environment and towards others. Shrub's way is ugliness.

11. A number of Indian nations
within the USA are prepared to make the difference in several states. This also includes the Lakota people; it is interesting that a former republican leader who was the enemy of the Traditional "Sioux" is also calling on people to vote Bush out of office. Maybe in his time in jail, Janklow had time to reflect on what is important in life.

There is an "elders' circle" in North America. They recognize the extreme threat posed to all living things by the unconscious greed of the Bush administration.

we stopped for gas there in September. At the intersection of 64 and I don't remember the other road, there were Democratic signs all over, it made me feel really good.

Lots of Tribal Governors came to Kerry's Ralley in ABQ.

14. Massive Medicine Wheel Circle (PHOTOs)
Edited on Sun Oct-31-04 11:25 AM by amen1234

A Medicine Wheel is an ancient spiritual tool with a history of widespread use all over Turtle Island (North America). Stones are set to mark the Four Directions of North, South, East and West, and also of other major points. In this manner, if done with knowledge and respect, a sacred space is defined. Within that space, the people can direct thoughts, feelings and actions toward a unified idea. The Medicine Wheel also helps people to be grounded physically, to properly orient to the Four Directions, and thus to have a clear sense of where they are. That foundation of stability gives a reliable base for high spiritual work.

"The Earth is drastically out of balance now," Bennie LeBeau says. "This Medicine Wheel ceremony will strive to re-set the basic tone -- or vibrational pattern -- of the West, and by extension help to re-attune the whole of the earth."

Center of the Wheel: The Four Grandmothers Standing Tall (Grand Tetons near Jackson, WY).

16. Badnarik could get as much as 5% in N.M.
That would take votes away from Bush. Combined with the Navajo vote, it looks good for Kerry in N.M. Sorry, no link.
