Queen intervenes in heated debate
From correspondents in London
31oct04

THE Queen has reportedly made a rare tiptoe into the world of politics by warning Prime Minister Tony Blair of her grave concerns over US policy towards global warming.

Britain's Observer newspaper today said the Queen was understood to have asked Mr Blair's office to lobby the US after observing the alarming impact of Britain's changing weather on her estates at Balmoral Castle, in Scotland, and Sandringham House, in east England.

"There has been dialogue between Downing Street and Buckingham Palace on all issues relating to climate change including the US position and the latest science," said one of Britain's leading expert's on climate change, who spoke to the newspaper on condition of anonymity.

"She is very keen to get involved," he said of the Queen.

5. I wonder if she happened to mention this to King George
when he and his entourage so graciously invited themselves to esconce himself in Buck House for their photo-op? Maybe she brought it up as they strolled through her gardens ravaged by His Highness's Secret Service.

6. I bet Prince Charles has been mentioning this to her as well ...

He's always been concerned about environmental issues, something he's passed along to his kids as well. Given how long the Queen Mum lived -- if Charles and William have inherited QEII's genes, I think we can assume that the House of Windsor is going to be active on this for many decades!

p.s. I wonder if the unnamed climatologist is TML Wigley, at East Anglia?

7. God Save The Queen!

No matter how silly the idea of monarchy is today, you have to hand it to Queen Elizabeth II.

She's been doing this queen thing for over 50 years, and I'd sooner trust her than most politicians.

Hell, I'm glad she's on our money.

10. She's quite astute, both politically and about current events.
She and her father were both avid outdoorsy types, as is Prince Charles. She's very accustomed to knowing her stuff before speaking out about it, even in private, so her comments are coming from a position of knowledge. She'd also like to see the Blair government outta there.

Glad she's weighing in with us.

11. The current royals actually are known
to have what we in the US would onsider to "liberal" leanings. The exception was the late queen mom and the right leaning facist types like the Windsors.

Charles the royal most slammed and ridiculed actually would probably be a Duer if he was a commoner!
:-)
