Small Fire Causes Edwards' Plane To Return To RDU
http://www.wral.com/news/3875756/detail.html

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A camera battery caught part of vice-presidential candidate John Edwards' plane on fire shortly after takeoff at 10 p.m. Friday.

The battery, in a still photographer's camera, caught part of a seat on the plane on fire.

The plane then circled around and as a security precaution landed back at RDU International Airport. Crews repaired the problem and the plane took off again around 11:30 p.m. No one was hurt in the incident.

The plane was en route to Marietta, Ohio, after Edwards spent Friday evening in Raleigh at a rally that included a Jon Bon Jovi concert.

2. I'm ok with him not flying anymore.
This is insane. Seriously, what are the odds that this many plane problems would happen to one person in the matter of, what, months?

7. How a battery can start a fire
If it's connected in series to an incendiary device carefully concealed in a camera bag or a film container, it can start a fire with ease.

9. The energy density in new high-capacity batteries (e.g. for laptops) is
enough to heat them above the ignition point of paper & most synthetic plastics; in theory, this energy could be released by shorting them out; to avoid this, most such batteries have built-in fuses designed to pop before the battery does; this is why your laptop is perfectly safe... However -- if the battery is intended to run a brief very-high-current load (like a photographer's flash), that fuse is sometimes omitted. (The usual alternative tho' is to use some sort of slo-blo fuse...)
