Kerry hits Bush over delay in issuing hunger report

WASHINGTON -- The Kerry campaign Friday criticized the Bush administration for putting off, possibly until after the election, issuing an annual report that could show an increase in the number of households that either don't have access to enough food or have experienced hunger.

The Agriculture Department report, originally scheduled to be made public either Thursday or Friday, is being reviewed by the department. No new date has been set for its release.

Alisa Harrison, the USDA's press secretary, said the Food Nutrition Service had some questions about definitions and other matters and called the review ''a normal part of our process.'' Kerry's campaign, she said, was ''attempting to make an issue where there isn't one.''

Kerry spokesman Phil Singer said the delay, coming just days before the election, was an example of the administration withholding bad news from the American people. ''It is absolutely unacceptable for the government to hold back information like this from the public,'' Singer said.

Kerry Accuses Bush of Delaying U.S. Hunger Report

excerpt:

Last year, the USDA said 11.1 percent of American households could not afford enough food for an active, healthy lifestyle, up from 10.7 percent the year before. The report, conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, is based on a survey of 50,000 households last December.

The report was published last year on Oct. 31 and the year before on Nov. 12.

Poverty is often linked to hunger and starvation. The Census Bureau reported in August that the number of poverty-stricken Americans rose by 1.3 million in 2003 to 35.9 million.

The USDA report focuses on food insecurity -- that is not having access to enough food for a healthy lifestyle. But it also addresses hunger.

The report said last year that in 2002 an estimated 3.8 million households in the United States (or 3.5 percent of U.S. households) went hungry, up from 3.3 percent in 2001.

2. What report ISN'T this administration delaying?
There is something new every day that they're going to hold off on releasing until after the election.

3. I'm going to be so relieved when President Kerry
takes over and we can finally start getting the
truth about the condition of our country. We cannot
address problems we know nothing about. I wish we
could pass laws that make it EASY to impeach presidents
who lie to the people. I would like to see AWOL impeached.

4. Leaks needed! + how many million hungry?
Come on leakers! let us know how many are hungry.

Story was inadequate. Should say how many millions are hungry. "households" is a bizzare measure unit. Ranges from one, to a dozen people. Stupid unit. Dont get me started on this.

12 million hungry was the figure from another source, last year.

PS 225 flat out starved to death in NYC, early nineteen thirties, by hospital records. Nationwide, i have never seen figures.
Hoover, Republican, caused 225 to starve to death.

"Business-led prosperity" is a recurring meme of Republicans.
You see it today in various forms. 225 dead is more accurate.

12 Billion would end all hunger in america. Bush's taxcuts for the rich, three of them, gave the rich 340 Billion. Just putting that in the stock market would return, somewhat like interest, 34 Billion each year. About three times what would end all hunger.

The extra 22 billion would end all homelessness... only 4 billion needed.

The exta 18 B. could juice up medical research at NIH by 55% .

total usa wealth 105 Trillion... 21 T if you sub line 2o, but a law forgiving debt would obviate doing that.
