Lawyer blasts Huntsman in Utah appearance for Texas pollution
Lawyer blasts Huntsman in Utah appearance for Texas pollution
Monday October 25, 2004

By TRAVIS REED
Associated Press Writer

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) A lawyer who represents 6,000 Texas children suing the Huntsman corporation for health problems allegedly caused by refinery emissions brought his case to Utah Monday, a week before voters will cast ballots on the governor's seat sought by Jon Huntsman Jr.

The visit from lawyer Tom Pearson and a Texas couple carrying their sick 18-month-old daughter was paid for by a group called ``Concerned Utahns for a Healthy Future.'' Besides drawing a handful of reporters, it also caught the attention of two Huntsman officials, who said Pearson was unethically arguing his case in the media and falsely accusing the company of violating pollution laws.

There, he said, refineries in Jefferson County pumped more than 27,000 tons of pollution into the air each year, including at least 10,000 tons from the county's four Huntsman-owned plants. Pearson said the actual pollution totals were probably much worse, because those numbers were self-reported by companies who critics say routinely underreport emissions to make themselves look better.

Pearson accused Jon Huntsman Sr. of creating an environment in Texas in which he'd never let his own children grow up.
