Iraq coalition vanishes from White House website
CANTON, United States (AFP) - The "coalition of the willing" in Iraq (news - web sites) has vanished -- from the White House Internet site, at any rate.

snip

After Edwards charged in their October 5 debate that US troops had suffered 90 percent of the casualties, Cheney angrily retorted that the statistic was "dead wrong" because it omitted deaths and injuries suffered by Iraqis.

"When you include the Iraqi security forces that have suffered casualties, as well as the allies, they've taken almost 50 percent of the casualties in operations in Iraq, which leaves the US with 50 percent, not 90 percent," Cheney said.

But Iraq was never considered a coalition member, and was never on the official White House list of coalition nations, leading some critics to charge that the list was pulled down to protect Cheney.

6. Yeah, I never quite understood this...Iraq was part of the coalition...
to invade itself?

It reminds me of the part in F 9/11 about Afghanistan being part of the "coalition" and who actually comprised its troops (U.S. soldiers).

8. You beat me to it.
Did Dick Cheney actually list Iraq as a member of the Coalition?

11. I don't think so, but that's how it sounds...

I think Cheney's logic goes something like this:

The coalition embarked on Operation Iraqi Freedom to liberate the Iraqis from Saddam.

Saddam was removed from power and his regime dispersed.

Then, the insurgents sprang up, attacking both Iraqi civilians and U.S. soldiers.

At that point, U.S. soldiers and friendly Iraqi security forces fought the insurgents. Both U.S. soldiers and Iraqi security forces were killed fighting the insurgents.

Of course, thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians were also killed in the process.

So--Cheney is counting the Iraqi security forces, but not counting the Iraqi civilians, as having been killed.

Thus these Iraqi security forces are de facto part of the "coalition," and Edwards, insensitive cad that he is, left them out!

With the defections and all that....

"So I don't worry about, and people shouldn't
worry about a draft. . . I think we're in good
shape, I really do. And, if not, we'll -- I'll address
the nation
. But I don't see any need to right now."
