STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

published: 10/22/2004

Five people face charges in connection with absentee ballot applications that were filled out on some South Dakota college campuses, Attorney General Larry Long and other officials said Friday.

They were identified as Joseph Alick, 28; Nathan Mertz, 20; Todd Schlekeway, 27; Rachel Hoff, 22; and Eric Fahrendorf, 24. Fahrendorf had been listed as a Republican Party employee. Officials said the rest were volunteers.

All had resigned earlier from a GOP get-out-the-vote effort after questions arose as to whether some absentee ballot requests were signed by the student in the presence of the notary public whose seal was affixed to the request.

The five and another worker, Larry Russell, resigned earlier this month. Russell had sought the party’s nomination for a special U.S. House election in June and most recently directed the GOP’s get-out-the-vote program.

4. It is time
It is time to do away with absentee ballots except for the very sick. I am developing a phobia concerning military absentee voting too.

The years I was involved in local politics the Dems often won on the machines (Me too) and lost when the absentee ballots came in. Not too long ago a fellow Vet at the VFW was bragging about voting absentee from (NY State) and voting on machine in Florida. He was a devout Republican. He is gone now.

Absentee ballot = a license to cheat.

8. People that commit voter fraud should get 10 yrs in prison without parole
This has got to stop, and if the penalty is stiff enough it will stop.

10. Six! according to the Argus Leader-
Six charged in absentee voter controversy
snip>
Five of the Republican notaries were charged in Minnehaha County since the ballot applications were all processed in Sioux Falls, even though some were gathered elsewhere.

Those five are: Joseph Alick, 28; Nathan Mertz, 20; Todd Schlekeway, 27; Rachel Hoff, 22; and Eric Fahrendorf, 24. Another GOP worker, Jennifer Giannonatti, will be charged in Pennington County because of ballots collected in Rapid City, Long said.

12. Huh, that's weird! They must have changed the title after I posted
because I copied the title straight from the article when I posted it. They must have updated the story. However, the article still states "five" according to your post above?

I'm so confused......!!!

13. They Were Promoted To Ohio...
Per TPM, they didn't have time to hang their heads in disgrace before being reassigned to Ohio...

"Last week we brought you the news that Larry Russell, head of the South Dakota GOP's get-out-the-vote operation (Republican Victory Program) had resigned along with several of his staffers amidst a burgeoning vote fraud scandal.

The Bush campaign promptly brought Russell and several of his newly-resigned staffers to Ohio to run the get-out-the-vote effort there.

Now South Dakota officials have charged six of Russell's South Dakota staffers, including at least three he brought with him to take care of business in Ohio..."
