Capitol Flu Shot Supply Going to DC Residents

Washington (AP) - Thousands of flu shots are being freed up from Capitol Hill for use by high-risk residents of the nation's capital.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist issued a joint statement this afternoon releasing the 3,000 flu shots. They say the hard-to-come-by vaccine is part of a shipment that arrived at the U.S. Capitol medical office.

It's normally given to anyone with Capitol credentials - which is what was going on earlier this week, until word got out and an uproar followed. D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (website - news - bio) called on the Capitol's attending physician to turn over excess vaccine supply to the city's Department of Health.

Officials say about 9,000 people got flu shots last year at the Capitol. This year, just 2,500 rolled up their sleeves, mostly because of requests to save the vaccine for people in high-risk groups.

And many, many of them are low-income African-American with lousy health care (or none), thus at high risk. Those 3,000 doses are a drop in the bucket for this disenfranchised population.
