London Times: The Army of God Marching for Bush

The army of God marching for Bush

Tim Reid reports

Voters in Florida are voting for Jesus — and John Kerry it seems, is not his candidate

....(Karl) Rove is a fervent believer in the power of America’s Religious Right to decide the election. It is now an article of faith inside the White House that if white born-again and evangelical Christians turn out in big numbers, Mr Bush cannot lose....

***

WHITE PROTESTANTS IN AMERICA WHO DESCRIBE THEMSELVES AS EITHER BORN-AGAIN OR EVANGELICAL ACCOUNT FOR A QUARTER OF THE ELECTORATE, A BIGGER VOTING BLOC THAN BLACKS AND HISPANICS COMBINED.

A recent poll by the National Annenberg Election Survey estimated that born-agains and evangelicals account for 36 per cent of registered voters in Missouri, 27 per cent in Ohio, 30 per cent in Iowa and 22 per cent in Pennsylvania. Recent polls show that up to 80 per cent of those voters prefer Mr Bush. Another survey found that 54 per cent of born-agains plan to vote for Mr Bush, while a massive 90 per cent of evangelicals plan to do so....

***

In Florida, the biggest prize among the battleground states, a third of voters describe themselves as evangelical. The state has more than 2,000 Baptist churches and a Baptist membership of nearly 1.1 million. Pastor (Jim) Henry (of Orlando's "vast" First Baptist Church) has been registering voters at his services since June. He does not tell them who to vote for, but it is clear that Mr Kerry, a practising Roman Catholic who backs abortion rights, is not the evangelicals’ favourite....

1. Freedom And God's Love Do Not "March"
They do not, contrary to Bush's assertions, enter in at the piont of a sword.

Forcing either Freedom, Democracy or Love on another is essentially a form of rape.

15. "'Love' at the point of a sword is called RAPE.
That's pithy. Excellent meme.

2. God tells them to vote for Bush.
Because if Bush gets back in, then Armageddon will happen, and they all will be raptured up to a new home, and all us "heathens" will be left here to clean up after them...

I wish the fucking "Rapture" would happen. I'm sick of worrying about what these Taliborn-agains are gonna do with what's left of our country...

3. There's one problem with that
A vast majority of the so-called religious Bush supporters are hypocrites and sinners who won't be raptured.

So we'll still be stuck with them.

5. There's a silver lining though
After the rapture society as we know it will cease to exist and it'll be practically legal to do all the things we fantasize about doing to them.

Like running them over with our cars, pulling their pants down in public, holding them down and shaving their heads, etc.

6. A thought to brighten your day
What if the "rapture" turned out to be a sort of cleansing, that rid the world of all the fundie pharisees and sent them straight to hell, leaving the rest of us decent folk to build a better world and prepare the way for the second coming?

Not bloody likely, but a pleasant thought nonetheless.

10. Isn't that what happens when you follow the ANTICHRIST?
A TRUE born again Christian would be screaming for Bush to be tied down and strip searched for the mark of the beast that he so obviously must bear.

I've always thought that the people who are so righteous will be the
evil ones and if there is a raputre...
the 144k will probably be some primative Indian tribe still managing to
exist in the modern world.

12. the problem is not all "born-agains" drink the Kool-aid
so what if 1/4 of responders identify themselves as "born-again". That's not really the same as being a bushbot cult member. I know lots of people who would answer yes to that question voting Kerry. Remember that the fundys that swept Bush to power were the Falwell, Robertson, Robison, Swaggart crowd....they don't have the power they used to-- not even in (R) circles.

14. Exactly... there are
fundamentalists who read the fine print in the Bible that says that God will CHOOSE the time and place of the Second Coming, not Falwell, Roberts (Pat or Oral), Copeland, etc., or *. They also recognize that acts reflecting the teachings of Jesus as manifestations of faith are more important than verbalizations of faith without substance. These are the people who heard Jesus' admonition to "go and pray in your closet", be humble, care for the poor, that "as you do to the least among you, so do you do to me." They recognize the current state of affairs as not being "of God", but of man's making. These are the people we need to encourage to act on their beliefs, not the * cult of greed members. At the same time, it does us no good to denigrate their beliefs.

16. You are exactly right.
In fact I have seen some posts here from people who identify themselves as evangelical Christians who say the real Christians are angry at the bushbot "Christians." Real Christians do not drink the kool-aid.

a mere lowly DUer, when he has the ear of the leader of the most powerful nation on earth, do you? After all, when did Jesus ever bother to talk to lowly peons when he had the chance to hang out with nice influential pharisees?

23. Onward Christian soldier, onward as in war.
With the cross of Jesus, dragging in the gore.

Bush preaches that Kerry's reluctance to start a war makes him un-fit for the Presidency. I say, "Bush's eagerness to start wars has made Bush the world's greatest threat to peace."

Bush preaches that Kerry is too liberal to be President. I say, "Bush's favoring the rich makes Bush completely out of touch with our democracy."

28. Welcome to the new Christian Fascist America --
Are we witnessing the Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood) come true?

I still think an amicable divorce between the democratic and fascist states is in order -- we'll take the northeast, across the northern tier, dipping down to save Chicago and the west coast -- the repukes can have the rest. Everyone would have five years to sort out where they want to live. The Democratic States of America would save money too, since we send more to the federal government than we ever get back yet those states that whine that they want 'smaller government' actually get more than they put in.

I firmly believe that we should all have the freedom to determine our own destiny -- and if the south and midwest, etc. wants to live in a Christian, fascist state, so be it. But I don't want them imposing their madness on me or mine. BTW, the way our new country would keep their fair share of the armed forces to deter the other from attacking!!!

30. excuse me
I suppose you live in a blue state. And that your state has no fundies, militia types and hasn't sent any shithead politicians to muck up the national scene. That race relations there are wonderful and your environment is pristine. Congratulations, You live in fantasy land!
Do you have any idea how many people on this board are from red states? You've got a lot of frickin gall, friend. I may not like all of my neighbors but I happen to like where I live. How would you feel if the shoe was on the other foot?
The US Constitution is my friend and protector. Would you take that away from me?

Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 02:04 PM by dave123williams
He/She/It was totally mortified by Bush, and shocked that the Yankees lost.

He/She/It then spent half the conversation wondering how a message of Love could be so perverted, used to justify the worst kind obscenity known (war), and just where Bush got off suggesting that he had ANY idea what God thinks?

We split the check. O8)
