US still interested in democratic facade for Pak govt

- By Nusrat Javeed -- Detail Story

ISLAMABAD: For celebrating the armed forces day of his country, the Turkish armed forces and naval attache held a reception at the spacious Marquee Hall of the Marriott Saturday. Three top generals of the Pak Army were there to affirm the depths of strategic relations between Islamabad and Ankara. Rao Sikandar Iqbal, the minister of defence, also came for the ceremonial cake cutting. The function had the warmth and feel of a grand gathering of friends and family.

During the heights of war on Iraq, for example, even some ‘embedded journalists’ showed and quoted some US soldiers, bickering over the short supply of rations for troops nudged to reach Baghdad with unprecedented speed. Some Iraq-based soldiers from the US and allied countries are even running their own "blogs" on the net these days. They make very desolate reading of the current realities of Iraq.

No one would still dare claiming that a ‘defying trend’ is building amongst the US troops that may endanger the presidency or the person of Bush the second. Why the ‘mess talk’ and one or two arrests of soldiers, for violating discipline here and there, make a big story, when it comes to Pakistan? That is the question, our military elite should be considering very seriously.
