Explosion in central Baghdad

Witnesses have reported a large explosion in central Baghdad.

Thick black smoke was seen rising above the skyline near the Haifa street area, scene of previous clashes with insurgents.

US troops sealed off the area after the blast..

I don't think it was realistic to think they could have 100% success, especially not outside the US, but they have achieved keeping domestic awareness of casualties very very low.

Car bomb shakes Baghdad's notorious Haifa Street

BAGHDAD (AFP) - A car packed with explosives detonated alongside a convoy of US tanks on the western edge of Haifa Street, a known trouble spot in the capital, sending black smoke billowing into the sky.

The burnt wreckage of the car lay in the street and a giant hole was punched in the concrete, an AFP reporter said Wednesday.


Residents said the explosion occurred when a convoy of tanks rumbled up the street. There were apparently no civilian casualties.


A US military spokesman confirmed the attack was a car bomb, and said there were no casualties or damages.
