Sanctions may follow North Korea's abandonment of talks
Washington-AP -- Those talks with North Korea about its nuclear program apparently haven't worked out the way the U-S hoped they would -- since North Korea seems to be walking away. And now, President Bush has to figure out what to do about it.

And one leading senator thinks tensions with the North may get worse before they get better. Republican Dick Lugar of Indiana -- chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee -- tells "Fox News Sunday" that the White House will probably respond with economic sanctions. Lugar says that might prompt a military response from the North Korean government.

2. Lugar says they'll respond with sanctions
Hey bonehead! There already ARE economic sanctions against North Korea. To get North Korea to be even more sanctioned than they already are, we'd have to send 60 year old manufactured goods that were made in northern Korea BACK to North Korea.

That's like saying, "well Castro hasn't died yet, so let's make it illegal for most Americans to vacation there." DUH! it already is!

7. Apparently, the earlier statements out of the WH about
being pleased with the talks referred to getting everyone else to side with the US against N Korea. The plan all along is to further isolate N Korea-->regime change. There was never any willingness on the US side to negotiate. I do wonder if the US is not a little over-optimistic though about the support of S Korea, China and Russia at least. (Japan is a lapdog, already in pocket, but not the others, I think.) I don't think they're ready to back what the Bushies* seem to have in mind. I don't doubt that bribes and threats have been used on these countries to line them up, but they may resist this kind of escalation. I HOPE so.

It didn't have to be this way. The N Koreans have been practically begging for a settlement of all this. And their aims and offers seem so reasonable. (Sorry, I don't have the link anymore.)

<<N.Korea Spells Out Demands -Xinhua Quoting KCNA
August 28, 2003

BEIJING (Reuters) - North Korea...said it would not build nuclear weapons in return for a non-aggression treaty with the United States.

"The package of solutions includes the U.S. signing of a non-aggression treaty with the DPRK (North Korea), the establishment of diplomatic relations with the DPRK, the guarantee of DPRK-Japan and inter-Korean economic cooperation, the completion of light-water reactors," Xinhua said in a dispatch from Pyongyang.

"In return, the DPRK will not manufacture nuclear weapons and allow in inspection, realize the ultimate dismantlement of nuclear facilities and stop the export and experiment of missiles," it said.>>

What's so impossible about that? It really IS true about how one becomes just like one's enemy. The US sneers at N Korea's "threatening" and "lying"--but that's just what the US does.

I do think the only hope for a resolution is in regime change--here in the US. They will never change and never stop. I just wish the whole world had a vote in who becomes US president. Then there wouldn't be any doubt of the outcome....
