<snip>
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi government on Monday released the chief negotiator for the city of Fallujah in a gesture apparently aimed at reviving peace talks to end the standoff in Iraq (news - web sites)'s major insurgent bastion.

<snip>
In Fallujah, city negotiator Sheik Khaled al-Jumeili was released from U.S. custody, three days after he had been detained following the breakdown of peace talks with the Iraqi government.

Al-Jumeili, who spoke to the Associated Press from his home, said he had been detained by U.S. troops, along with three others, on Friday. Witnesses said the Islamic cleric had been picked up after he left a mosque following Friday prayers in a village about 10 miles south of Fallujah.

Al-Jumeili said the four men were taken to a Marine base outside Fallujah and then transported by helicopter to another location.

A top Falluja negotiator who has been released from US custody says peace talks with the interim Iraqi government have been called off.

"The people of Falluja have suspended negotiations, despite the fact they had made progress, because of arrests like mine and American policies," Khalid Hamud al-Jumaili said.

Al-Jumaili was released at 2am (2300 GMT) on Monday after his arrest three days ago.

US marines detained him along with Falluja's police chief Sabir al-Janabi and two other police officers while they were taking their families out of the city for safety, on Friday.

4. An interesting method of peacemaking
Nice, arresting the other side's negotiator. Such a sign of "good faith" then, to release him! :eyes:

Hit bottom?--no! There's not a depth made that can contain this crew! Find a new fucking shovel and keep digging!

The people and council of Fallujah look better by comparison more with each sunrise.
