California Governor Fights Indian Casino Expansion
By Adam Tanner
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has a warning for state voters:

"The Indians are ripping us off."

Schwarzenegger has taken up the line to convince them to reject a tribe-backed initiative on the Nov. 2 ballot that would allow rapid expansion of American Indian casinos in the nation's most populous state and derail the governor's own effort to manage casino growth.

Some critics say the governor is going too far with his campaign -- tapping a deep vein of hostility that dates back to the settlers' conquest of the U.S. West.

"His statement touches on racism," said Virgil Moorehead, chairman of the Big Lagoon Rancheria tribe in northern California. "It's so uneducated and so far-fetched to say that we are ripping off the state."

Added Victor Rocha, an American Indian who edits a Web site related to casino gambling: "I don't think it is racist but it sure fans the flames of racism by going and saying that and just having that type of hatred of Native Americans."

Might be more to it than that
San Diego County Democratic Party is recommending voting NO on 70 - might be worth finding out why (http://www.sddemocrats.org/ballot_measures.htm). I don't know enough about it myself, but the ballot itself says it's about giving exclusive gaming rights to tribes. Maybe there are other disenfranchised groups that want to be included? Dunno.

Here are a few other California democratic groups that say vote NO:

16. This IsMy Dilemma!
Honestly I would love nothing better than to vote NO on anything Der Governator insists I do otherwise with, but lots of organizations I respect actually AGREE with him on this thing.

It irks me that anybody with the slightest knowledge of history can say the Indians are ripping US off!

is right twice a day and inspite of Arnie I am voting NO because this Prop. is bad and Arnie is on the correct side. It's wrong of him to use the Indians the prop is wrong for other reasons, like it being bad for the environment.

6. this is straight up racism and playah hating..
I'm so fucking sick of the "I didn't vote for this" line of ads. Well what the fuck did you vote for? I suppose these idiots thought the tribes would be content to collect a few beads, or other wampam. If you don't like the fact that the tribes are making some money, then don't go to their damn casinos. What about the corpos that are raking in billions, like the opponents of 70 say the tribes are. Shall they pay an inflated tax rate? The tribes want to pay the same corporate tax rates as all other businesses do. These numbnuts want them to pick up the slack for junior's failed economic policies. Herr Gropinazi makes it sound like them dirty injuns are going to open casinos on every street corner. They're limited to building them on the res. I mailed my absentee this afternoon, and proudly voted YES on prop 70.

7. what? i thought he was for the casinos?
wasn't he pushing to balance the budget with proceeds from the casinos? i thought i heard he was paving the way for californias biggest casino, in a rural area. i suppose now the indians are ripping us off, so the casinos will have to be owned by a private company, not the indian tribes.

8. "The Indians are ripping us off.".....Now I've heard everything.
Enron Arnold is such an ignorant, corrupt, thoughtless, racist nazi pig.

Years of taking too many illegal steroids have fucked up Arnie's brain.

He is an extremely dangerous knuckledragging corporate bootlicker and is completely unqualified to be the governor of anything other than his own life.

when I read this! Also, Arnie might want to call up GeeDuhbya and ask him what "sovereingty" means! Of course, GeeDuhhb couldn't give him a straight answer, but maybe with Uncle Ted's help, he could figure it out.

20. I'm voting NO on 70
the Sierra Club says NO because this is a ploy by the big casinos to spread all over the state. Arnie may have his reasons and his reasons may be wrong the Prop is still a bad one and deserves a NO.

I usually go with the Sierra Club's recommendations on California propositions. In this case the California Democratic Party, the Sierra Club, and my old friend Pete Stahl are all on the same page - NO on 70.

http://www.peterates.com/index.shtml

I'm also opposed to the expansion of casino gambling because it attracts people who have problems with gambling. It's an addiction for some people. I've seen families torn apart or financially devastated by gambling problems.

I'm voting NO on propositions 68 and 70. I don't care if Arnold Schwarzenegger or Satan himself agrees with me.
