A 31-year-old Army staff sergeant from Mesa died this week after being struck by an explosive device while on patrol in Afghanistan.

Brian Scott Hobbs was a big guy, his 6-foot frame topped by dark hair like his dad's. He'll be remembered for his Christian faith and desire to spread the word about the even bigger guy "upstairs," his family said.

The 31-year-old father of three was one of two soldiers killed Thursday in Miam Do. The other was Spc. Kyle K. Fernandez, 26, of Pearl City, Hawaii. advertisement

Hobbs, assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, was a staff sergeant who had served in the U.S. Army for 13 years. He enlisted after graduating from Red Mountain High School in 1991.
