ABC News - Rove Testifies Before Grand Jury in CIA Leak Investigation
WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2003 — With election day getting closer the President's top advisor, Karl Rove, took time away from his duties to testify before a federal grand jury this morning. Rove appeared before the federal grand jury investigating the leak of a CIA officer's name and testified for almost 2 and a half hours.

Rove declined to answer reporters' questions as he departed the federal courthouse and set off in a-non descript bronze colored midsize car. Rove was escorted out of the courthouse by two US Marshals and an unidentified man. Rove sat in the back seat of the car and immediately began making using his cell phone.

9. Let us hope that they have set a trap for the scoundrel.
The fact that they have waited this long indicates that this is the man they were after.

Rule #1 of examining a witness: Never ask a question to which you don't know the answer.

I suspect they had to know the answers to their questions before they asked him.

85. So.....
They not only get Rove for divulging the name of a CIA undercover operative, but also for perjuring himself before a grand jury? Well. Very, very nicely done, if so. My faith in the justice system may be on its way to being restored. Every time I see Robert Novak on the "Tee Vee screen" that faith has always taken a strong hit. And I'm not even going to get into the other documented lies of this administration, let alone the lack of consequences for those lies. **sigh**

8. Lockhart Statement on Rove Testifying in CIA Leak Case
WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In response to reports that Karl Rove testified before the grand jury investigating the CIA leak case, Kerry-Edwards campaign Senior Adviser Joe Lockhart issued the following statement:

"With two weeks to go before the election, the American people are still in the dark about how it is that their White House leaked the name of an undercover CIA operative to the press, jeopardizing the life of this agent and possibly violating federal law.

"Instead of hiding behind the lawyers he so often likes to criticize, George Bush should direct Karl Rove and anyone else involved to go to the White House briefing room and come clean about their role in this insidious act. If the president sincerely wanted to get to the bottom of this potential crime, he'd stop the White House foot dragging and fully cooperate with this investigation."

24. Attention! (please read)
I have been in contact with some people connected to the Kerry-Edwards campaign, and a couple other associates, regarding Rove testifying in front of the Plame grand jury. As you can guess, this is very significant. Rove, like his buddies Bush, Cheney, and Powell, had spoken with investigators previously, but did not want to be put under oath.

Today he was under oath for a good reason. And it ain't because Fitzgerald wanted to thank him for his service to the country.

We have had a media frenzy on Cheney's daughter in the last two days. While gay rights are extremely important, Cheney's daughter is not. These people are trying to distort the issues that are crucial in this election. Things like Bush lying about saying he's not concerned about Usama bin Laden.

In the past, I have asked DUers to help in the effort to get the media to cover the Plame case. LTTE are always important. And we are getting towards the end of the debate season. We only have a short time.

Can we get people on DU to assist in writing letters to local newspapers, etc? LTTE are one of the most read parts of a newspaper during presidential election seasons. We can show that this administration is a group of criminals!

Are people ready and willing?

57. KICK, H2O Man!
You should do a separate thread on this.

We need to generate MUCHO BIGTIME UBER-NOISE about this.

We need to make THIS - OUR October Surprise.

Maybe kkkarl rove will be his own October Surprise.

Time to start hounding the networks...

My favorites:

CNN - (404) 827 - 0234 - when you connect, press 8 to bypass the long intro message.

MSNBC - (201) 583 - 5000

Washington Post - (202) 334 - 7582

There's more in Skinner's list AND in the Five-Star collection in Activism/Events.

58. I just posted a more detailed article on GD
that I am hoping some people here will take the time to read and comment on. It's called: "Steel & Glass:The October Plame Surprise."

This has the potential to bury the Bush administration. Do not be discouraged that there are not indictments and convictions yet. The public will react harshly to the fact that this is dragging on so long, when Karl Rove could have cleared it up immediately had he told the truth a year ago.

Rove was escorted out of the courthouse by two US Marshals and an unidentified man. Rove sat in the back seat of the car and immediately began making using his cell phone.

ROVE: "I don't care if he's in f---in' Air Force One, get 'im on the line."

...

ROVER: "Mr. President, I think we need to talk to Ashcroft right away. Does he have the playbook they used against Archibald Cox? He needs to dust it off."

asked twenty different ways sprinkled amongst innocuous questions to try and catch him off guard. Plus, individual grand jurors can ask questions of him and it can take a while to go all the way around and let everyone ask their questions. Whether or not they got anything useful out of Csrl, it warms my heart to imagine him being questioned by a bunch of ordinary citizens who I am sure Carl considers much beneath him in social stature.

Two weeks before the showdown, Bush can't give up on the only guy he's ever really been able to trust with the keys to victory. Now, he's thinking, how do I keep Rove in the fold while putting him out to pasture? -- and the prez, as he admits, "doesn't do nuance."

If so, Libby and Rove are in deep trouble. There may not be TIME for Plan B.

47. I testified in court for over 10 years and yes 2 and 1/2 hours is
a very very long time. Thirty minutes can seem like a lifetime with the right lawyer. I remember one of the people I went up against on a frequent basis was prone to reading his notes while you were testifying and then looking up at you with a glint in his eye. I always knew I was in for a real tough time with that guy, he was absolutely brilliant. From what I have read Fitzgerald is the best. I just don't know where this is going. I have the feeling they keep putting patches on the bad tire which is Bush and his campaign and hope they can roll it to the finish line. I think we are going to win. I cannot allow myself to believe anything else right now, not even for a second.

WASHINGTON, DC – Responding to breaking news today that Bush Senior Advisor Karl Rove spent over two hours testifying before the grand jury investigating the CIA leak which revealed Valerie Plame's name while she was an undercover agent, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Terry McAuliffe released this statement.

"Two and a half hours is a long time to spend in front of a federal grand jury – a lot of information must have been shared," said McAuliffe. "Karl Rove needs to come clean and tell us what he told the grand jury today, and the President should show some leadership by making sure Karl Rove does just that. There are important questions about this criminal investigation that the White House needs to stop ducking and start answering.

"Tell us who is responsible for leaking Valerie Plame's identity. This is a serious matter; the person from the Bush White House who leaked this information is guilty of treason. This should have been resolved a long time ago. It needs to be resolved now. The American people deserve no less from their President."

79. Grand jury testimony is secret, and McCauliffe knows that
For all we know Rove could have just said that he didn't recall a thing, like Reagan did during his Iran Contra testimony.

I find it interesting that the same cast of characters that sold us the Iraq WMDs story, like the NY Times's Judith Miller, were held in contempt for refusing to testify.

43. Runaway jury! Runaway jury!
http://www.udayton.edu/~grandjur/faq/faq8.htm

The only way we're going to bag these sonsabitches is if someone on the Grand Jury knows that they can take the horns of the investigation away from Ashcroft's bitch-zombies. 'Cause you can bet your ass that the prosecutor isn't going to tell them that.

Here's hoping.

55. Now we will see just how much power he has
The Rove revenge and power stories are becoming legendary. Will he "outfox" them, as usual, or can we finally have a shred of decency appear in our country?

62. Rove Testifies in Wilson Leak
Under the 1982 Intelligence Identities Protection Act, it is a crime for someone with authorized access to classified information to knowingly disclose the identity of a covert agent. Shortly after the investigation started, Bush ordered everyone in the administration to provide "full cooperation" with the investigation, and Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie said the disclosure of Plame's name could be worse than Watergate "in terms of the real-world implications of it." But nobody has come forward to admit to being a source for Novak's column. Besides Rove, a number of other White House aides, including counsel Alberto Gonzales, have gone before the grand jury.

Rove's grand jury appearance comes as Fitzgerald is aggressively pursuing the testimony of two other journalists ensnared in the case, Time's Matthew Cooper and Judith Miller of the New York Times. Three days after Novak’s column appeared, Cooper and two colleagues wrote an article for Time Magazine’s Website saying that “government officials” had told them that Wilson’s wife was a CIA official. Miller was subpoenaed to testify about sources she spoke to while reporting on Wilson, though she never published anything on the subject.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan found Cooper in contempt of court on Wednesday, for the second time, for refusing to testify. (Cooper’s first contempt citation was rescinded when he gave limited information to prosecutors after a source, Lewis I. “Scooter” Libby, chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, authorized him and several other journalists to discuss their confidential conversations.) Miller was found in contempt last week. She and Cooper, citing the need for journalists to be able to protect their sources, are appealing the rulings jointly, but no decision is expected from the appeals court until mid-to-late November. They could each face up to 18 months in jail if they lose their appeal.

Novak’s status continues to be a mystery; neither he nor his lawyer, Jim Hamilton, will talk about their contacts with prosecutors. Lawyers for other witnesses in the case have concluded that Novak is cooperating, since he has not been held in contempt. But even if Novak is cooperating and has revealed his sources, these lawyers say, Fitzgerald would want to talk to other journalists to strengthen any case he might bring. And the prosecutor may be seeking to substantiate a Sept. 2003 Washington Post story, which quoted an administration source saying that two top White House officials disclosed Plame's identity to at least six Washington journalists in retribution for Wilson's comments. The leak was "meant purely and simply for revenge," the official said. Fitzgerald might want to learn if those two officials were the same ones who talked to Novak. Each instance of disclosure of Plame's identity would be a separate crime

83. They do it
Because there gung-ho conservative bosses tell them to,media are whores because they want de-regulation,and as Democrats we know that this only hurts democracy.

because of that they pretend to be on both sides but they are not they want de-regulation to much its all about the corporate profits.

Its a shame when we live in a country where profits are more important then democracy.

86. Keep in mind, profit is NOT the most important to most people.
However, I would agree it has gotten very out of balance and it is moving in that direction right now, especially with the inflation of fear, which does little but exacerbate the situation.
