A British ambassador today accused the Foreign Office of mounting an extraordinary sex smear to drive him from his job.
Craig Murray, 45, the former British envoy to Uzbekistan, said senior Foreign Office officials concocted false allegations against him because he spoke out against human rights abuses in the country.
The trumped-up charges included claims he had sold passports for sex and was too drunk to work.
Mr Murray, dismissed from his post yesterday, said the "ploy" to force him out led to a nervous breakdown and left him with serious health problems. He claimed the smears were authorised at "senior levels of the Foreign Office".
