Male bass producing eggs human harmones suspected cause... MUST READ

MOOREFIELD, W.Va. - The South Branch of the Potomac River is as clear as bottled water here, where it rolls over a bed of smooth stones about 230 miles upstream from Washington. But there is a mystery beneath this glassy surface.

Many of the river's male bass are producing eggs.

Scientists believe this inversion of nature is being caused by pollution in the water. But they say the exact culprit is still unknown: It might be chicken estrogen left over in poultry manure, or perhaps human hormones dumped in the river with processed sewage. Chances are, it is not something that federal and state inspectors regularly test for in local waters.

The discovery has made the South Branch the latest example of an emerging national problem: Hormones, drugs and other man-made pollutants appear to be interfering with the chemical signals that make fish grow and reproduce.

2. a recent report said ALL US streams, rivers, lakes, contain harmones

and these harmones are changing the sex of water life.

it's also affecting humans that consume meat. look at all the men that now have small breasts. look at the stats that have pre teen girls starting mensus and growing breasts.

it's happening. it's real. it's a crises.

14. Information which may help your granddaughter:
http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99992119

Throughout the West, girls are tending to reach puberty earlier. This has been blamed on everything from improved diet to environmental contaminants. But African-American girls are developing even earlier than their white counterparts. About half of black girls in the US begin developing breasts or pubic hair by age eight, compared with just 15 per cent of white girls, one study has found. In Africa, girls enter puberty much later, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

"Placenta, hormones or estrogen"

That big discrepancy may be explained, at least in part, by the more frequent use of hormone-containing hair products among African Americans, says Chandra Tiwary, former chief of paediatric endocrinology at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. "I believe that the frequency of sexual precocity can be reduced simply if children do not use those hair products," he says.

The products are sold as shampoos or treatments to deep-condition dry, brittle hair. The labels usually state that they contain placenta, hormones or "estrogen", although not all products that make such claims contain active hormones. While New Scientist's inquiries suggest such products are no longer sold in Europe, many are still available worldwide over the Internet.

And they remain popular among African Americans. A small study published earlier this year by Su-Ting Li of the Child Health Institute in Seattle suggests that nearly half of African-American parents use such products, and that most also use them on their children.

For other ethnic groups the figure is under 10 per cent. Tiwary told New Scientist that he has carried out a bigger, as yet unpublished, survey of 2000 households that confirms these findings.

In 1998 Tiwary, now retired, published a study of four girls - including a 14-month-old - who developed breasts or pubic hair months after beginning to use such products. The symptoms started to disappear when they stopped using them. The year before, he published a study showing that some of the products used by his patients contained up to four milligrams of oestradiol per 100 grams. Others contained up to two grams of oestriol per 100 grams.

I hope you find some solutions here...

19. Poor baby!
In the other thread about this article, I wrote, and I'll state it again, that no one has any idea what sort of effect all of these chemicals, and hormones, and pollutants, will have on the planet in 20 years.

21. That was the gist of this morning's WP article about it...
"Whatever's doing this to the fish may be the canary in the mineshaft," said Margaret Janes, a West Virginia activist with the Appalachian Center for the Economy and the Environment.

4. Just give Bush a chance!
If you just give him a chance, we won't have to worry about the fish in the rivers.

There won't be any.

If you let him expand his Healthy Forests Initiative, we won't have any problems with trees burning.

There won't be any.

If you let him expand his Clear Skies Initiative, we won't have a problem with air quality.

There won't be any.

Of course, him and his followers will be raptured and be sitting on the right hand of God during our tribulation.

12. Hormones from one species do not impact other species.
At least that was the spin I got from a USDA scientist when I called up and asked specific questions about the safety of Bovine Growth Hormones being used in the dairy industry.

He went on at great length explaining to me that COW hormones have no impact on humans when they are ingested because they are specific to cattle and they are broken down in the digestive tract after you drink milk or eat a dairy product. I know he could tell I was not convinced by his arguments, and I listened to him becoming more and more vehement that there is NO PROBLEM with feeding kids food laced with hormones made for cattle.

I nursed my kid for a year, and there was no way I was gonna feed her cows' milk that was chock full of hormones once I stopped nursing her. I bought BGH free milk.

Imagine the idea of SWIMMING in hormones or even drinking water laced with them...

I want a new planet and a new President!

20. LTTE's hurry, hurry
Get this story all over the south. Nothing freaks those people out more than weird environmental stories. Sorry to label southerners. But if you can get them thinking about one thing, they'll start thinking about other things too.
