Provinces file three same-sex notices

Ottawa — The federal government's plan to legalize same-sex marriage is facing challenges at the Supreme Court from Alberta and Quebec, and British Columbia has reserved the right to step in as well.

The three provinces have filed notices of intent to intervene in the federal government's reference to the top court of its draft bill to legalize gay marriage.

Quebec is not opposed to same-sex marriages but wants to preserve civil unions in that province as well as its rights over marriage licences and registries, a provincial official said.

BC may not even make a representation...they just wanted to reserve a spot on the list while they had a chance.

BC has polygamy in fact.

Their courts have decided for gay marriage...as have Quebec's and Ontario's

The premier there doesn't mind...but ya gotta play to the home crowd.

He will be 'reluctantly' forced into it by the courts.

2. Alberta is weird

Conservative in Canada, but aparently, if Albertans had voted for the US president in 2000, they would have voted for Gore. All of Canada's provinces in fact, would have voted Gore....

Anyway, like you said, Alberta will put up this protest, but will lose in the end with the Supreme Court and the Federal Parliament.

A vocal minority in Alberta makes the headlines...but Albertans are true blue Canadians when push comes to shove.

4. Alberta is conservative country

For those of you in the US, read Rethuglican. I live in Alberta, and I swear I must be one of the only 10 liberals (democrats) here!

I think they will hold out on the same-sex marriage. Like most of the rethugs in the US, conservatives feel they must stick their nose into everybody's business - whether it affects them or not.
