Pro-Gay Republican Group to File Suit

GENARO C. ARMAS

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - A pro-gay Republican group plans to file a lawsuit asking a federal court to overturn the U.S. government's "don't ask, don't tell" policy covering gays in the military.

Log Cabin Republican leaders said the suit would be filed Tuesday in federal district court in Los Angeles. The "don't ask, don't tell" policy, put into place in 1993 during the Clinton administration, allows gays and lesbians to serve so long as they do not disclose their sexual orientation and do not engage in homosexual acts.

Log Cabin members serving in the military asked the group's leaders over the last four months to take legal action, the group's attorney, Marty Meekins, said Tuesday. They did not come forward because of a specific incident, but simply because "of fear of the military finding out their sexual orientation if they are gay and lesbian," Meekins said.

"This case is fundamentally about correcting a misguided governmental policy based on prejudice toward gay and lesbian Americans," he added.

2. "Don't ask, don't tell" is a joke, a Clintonian joke at that!
This bullshit of a policy opened the door to witch hunts in which even hetero soldiers were trapped. On more than one occasion women soldiers were forced to consent to sex for fear of being accused of being lesbians.

I still remember the picture of the puke Senators Sam Nunn and John Wagner sitting on a ship's bunk to illustrate how "homosexual predators" would enjoy sharing closed quarters. Hijos the puta! There have always been gays in the military.

Kill this stupid policy and, if Kerry keeps his word, he will do a Truman and get rid of discrimination in the ranks.

4. They should endorse Kerry and...
stop pretending that the GOP is anything other than the cesspool of bigotry that it is.

6. What the hell are they doing?
This is the last best defense to avoid the draft and they are trying to get rid of it?

Uncle Sam: I need you!

Me: Well I need a butch looking gal with short hair in a uniform so count me in! Do we get to bunk together?

Uncle Sam: Damn dyke! Is your friend available?

Me: Well he is busy redecorating my kitchen but I know how he loves "Military Men go South" so I'll bring him by when he is done. . .

8. Timing?
As mentioned above, they're 12 years late on this, so why not be 12 years and a month late? They made it on the news (I heard it on CBS radio) which presumably was the only point, but what's the goal, politically? To make undecided moderates say: "Oh, Bush must be all right; there are gay Republicans" or to throw the weasel down by making fundamentalists say, "Oh my God! There are gay Republicans!" Or are they just idiots?

9. Just a minor quibble here, but...
Log Cabin Republicans are NOT pro-gay Republicans. They are pro-Republican gays.

"Pro-gay Republicans" implies that there are heterosexual Republicans out there championing a gay cause. Whereas the truth is that these are gay people, who happen to be Republicans, who are now taking up a gay cause.

11. Clinton's "Don't-Ask" Policy Was About As Misguided As Bush's Stem Cell...
... policy decision. That was one of Clinton's big boners... he should have just totally eliminated the restriction, period. This splitting-the-baby stuff just doesn't work in the long run.
