Christopher Reeve dies (unconfirmed)
Edited on Mon Oct-11-04 12:08 AM by JohnLocke
Kerry just mentioned him in the debate, IIRC. No link yet. Apparently Drudge mentioned it...but you know what an ass he is. I'm hoping this all turns out the be inaccurate.
----

By Bill Zwecker -- Chicago Sun Times
Monday, October 4, 2004

----
Wonder how Christopher Reeve remains positive, upbeat and totally focused on his recovery nearly a decade after that horseback riding injury left him a quadriplegic? The actor and director credits both his choice of career -- made when he was 13 -- and his good fortune to be blessed with a supportive family and group of friends.
In addition, Reeve's unique perspective as one of the leading advocates for both biological and rehabilitation research to find cures for paralysis patients ''continues to instill in me a tremendous sense of optimism and hope that I'll someday walk -- because I see amazing advances every day,'' said Reeve, calling from his East Coast home last week.
While the former ''Superman'' star certainly found fame and success as an actor, ''I faced a lot of rejection -- as do all actors. It's a very competitive business, and you have to learn to deal with the challenges of criticism or else you can easily develop very low self-esteem. Living that life for nearly 30 years before my injury helped prepare me.''
Reeve's strong marriage with his wife, Dana, has been widely publicized as a hopeful message to families facing what Reeve calls ''the most life-altering experience anyone can confront. This kind of catastrophic event does one of two things: A marriage that was in trouble before a spinal cord injury will probably fail. One that was thriving ... will continue and grow stronger.
''My relationship with Dana went from close to profound.''

10. I was listening to Drudge when it was reported
The reporter is from LA Weekly and at the end of the live interview, she told Drudge that she "trusted" he will give her credit on his web site for reporting the story.

Christopher does not want us to be sad, although I am.

Rejoice in life! I believe that is his message.

9. Just a couple of weeks ago he did an interview on the BBC World Service...
I didn't realize that he had had a VERY bad year healthwise...
He had to stop a lot of his excerise/rehab because the harness gave way, and he wound up fracturing his hip. He had osteoporosis.

He also had a systemic infection in the blood which he barely survived.

I was really shocked to find out how badly things were going for him...

He was so brave and hopeful in the interview, even though he stated that he now thought he probably wouldn't ever be able to walk because of the setbacks in his rehab program....

What good and brave soul. Godspeed, Christopher Reeve.

like this:

I pray he accepted Jesus the Christ as his Savior.

But based on his political party, I don't think so.

a bondslave to the Christ

REAL nice, huh? So based on my political party, I can't possibly be Christian? This person needs to buy a clue, BADLY.

And then the stuff about how he took steroids, and was a skirt-chaser and had illegit children and one guy who said he politicized medicine and medicinal research so he isn't going to praise him.

WTF is WRONG with those people? They can't just say a simple "oh that's too bad, RIP?" Sheesh. Heartless bastards.

19. I heard a BBC World interview with him a week or so ago....
Reeve had had some major setbacks that weren't reported in the media-- had nearly died 3 times over the last year or two. Something about his bone marrow shutting down and leaving him vulnerable to infection--overwhelming sepsis.

I worried when I heard this, because it hadn't been reported. Even the staid brit interviewer was clearly caught offguard by this news....

I assume this story of his death is true... RIP, Christopher. You've meant a lot to so many people. We'll do our best to preserve your legacy with stemcell research. God, I'm sad....

28. As of 1:00 AM, Nope
CNN, MSNBC, USAToday, IMDB.Com (which sometimes gets updated quicker than the news sites), Google, Yahoo, ABCNews, CBSNews, and as a last resort, even FoxNews because it was the only other one I could find.

Not one thing about Christopher Reeve's death If A&E Biography did a show for him because he had died (somebody above mentioned the show), then it definitely would've been reported by this time.

I'd say right now that its a hoax. When Rodney died, the sites were updated within minutes.

33. Drudge
Nikki Finke in Los Angeles is reporting that actor Christopher Reeve is dead, according to sources close to the actor. He died suddenly Sunday. News of his death has not been reported publicly yet. His family will make an announcement Monday at the earliest. Reeve was just mentioned Friday in the second live presidential debate by John Kerry. Noting he was a friend of the paralysed Reeve, Kerry said he was in favor of further stem cell research because Reeve could walk again one day thanks to such science.... MORE...

35. Nothing at Reuters or AP raw feed yet
and it's now 0106 eastern.

I'm not familiar with Drudge; does he often float these sort of rumors? If Mr. Reeve had gone to the hospital for some emergancy reason within the last hour/hour and a half or if there was a 911 call to his residence, this could be the source of a rumor like this.

I'm wishing the best for Mr. Reeve and his family.

Haele
