Cheney gives web link during debate that leads to George Soros site
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 02:04 AM by symbolman
During the Tuesday night debate, Dick Cheney invited viewers to check out the facts regarding his involvement with Halliburton and encouraged viewers to go to http://www.factcheck.com

He may have meant factcheck.ORG, instead of George Soros's web site which is where the link if forwarded.

Perhaps a political science person *registered to Brooks Jackson* who works at the Annenburg Public policy Center in the University of Pennsylvania realised Cheney's mistake and redirected web traffic to the George Soros website, but NOT LIKELY as we investigated.

Curiously there seems to be a link between factcheck.com AND factcheck.org as both are registered at the same place.

BUT the Truth may be a simple Hack coming from the Cayman Islands where it rerouted -- NOT UPENN -- more to follow.

Read all about it at Take Back the Media.com with actual screen shot http://www.tbtmradio.com/geeklog/public_html/index.php

I could remember what I was saying about you the other day!

There was a thread about something that IMO would make a great flash movie and I said it should be suggested to you. Of course, I'm sure you have no shortage of ideas, but I wish I could remember what it was.

Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 02:51 AM by philaguy
"We're furiously working on this story as it gets curiouser and curiouser as we get deeper into it"

There is not much of a story to work on here.

Factcheck.com was registered quite some time ago by Name Administration Inc. Name Administration often registers expired or abandoned domain names which comprise generic or descriptive terms, e.g.:

http://arbiter.wipo.int/domains/decisions/html/2002/d2002-1167.html

http://www.arb-forum.com/domains/decisions/281591.htm

The staff at Name Administration have been through some difficult times lately, due to the impact of hurricane Ivan on Grand Cayman, and they were delighted to have been given this opportunity by Vice President Cheney.

Name Administration Inc. received no payment, inducement, or any communication from George Soros or any political organization for re-directing the domain name. It was purely a volunteer gesture.

10. I disagree
what you have posted here makes for a great story :)

Not to mention we scooped DailyKos for once.

I think the workings of the clueless like Cheney, trying to use the web only to be trapped in it by fun and fearless workers bored by Hurricanes tramping through their living rooms is a great tale.

thanks for the info, we'll add it to the site

Please don't send thank you emails. Traffic volume in the first hour alone was on the order of 48,000 unique visitors.

14. Sounds to me
like SOROS needs to send donations - he has the most to gain from that many unique visitors -- maybe we can post this on our site and help out in that direction - tho we run TBTM on t-shirt donations, our mortgage and sweat we still like to help..

are you associated with the webmaster philaguy?

18. Who I am

I am their attorney, as noted in the links posted above. As noted above, Name Administration Inc. re-directed the domain name, which they've had for some time, as a wholly voluntary gesture upon hearing their domain name mentioned during the debate. Name Administration Inc. has received no compensation for so doing, and will not accept any direct or indirect compensation from any individual or organization.

24. from debate transcript
<CHENEY: Well, the reason they keep mentioning Halliburton is because they're trying to throw up a smokescreen. They know the charges are false.

They know that if you go, for example, to factcheck.com , an independent Web site sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania, you can get the specific details with respect to Halliburton.

It's an effort that they've made repeatedly to try to confuse the voters and to raise questions, but there's no substance to the charges.>

Gawd this is rich.

25. the factcheck.org server is down
but the Soros site is working great!

Regardless, factcheck.org doesn't clear Cheney or Halliburton. It just clears up a technical error in the Democrats' commercial: Cheney didn't receive $2M while vice president, he received $1.5M 3 days before taking office (and is due to receive two more hefty payments from Halliburton in addition to his deferred income) - this according to AirAmerica.

27. Sorry but I don't get why
this is a good thing that the site was purposely redirected to Soros. Seems to me it would be better for us if it was purely coincidental. What am I missing here. The Repugs can now say this was dirty tricks. By the way I love Soros site and have registered and received an email back from him.

30. Click on the said link and see what it says on the very first paragraph!
Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 01:20 PM by Red Fox
Cheney wrongly implied that FactCheck had defended his tenure as CEO of Halliburton Co., and the vice president even got our name wrong. He overstated matters when he said Edwards voted "for the war" and "to commit the troops, to send them to war." He exaggerated the number of times Kerry has voted to raise taxes, and puffed up the number of small business owners who would see a tax increase under Kerry's proposals.

Cheney got our domain name wrong -- calling us "FactCheck.com" -- and wrongly implied that we had rebutted allegations Edwards was making about what Cheney had done as chief executive officer of Halliburton.

In fact, we did post an article pointing out that Cheney hasn't profited personally while in office from Halliburton's Iraq contracts, as falsely implied by a Kerry TV ad. But Edwards was talking about Cheney's responsibility for earlier Halliburton troubles. And in fact, Edwards was mostly right.

Slam dunk!!

The only one that cuts their way is the analysis of Cheney's "deferred compensation" from Halliburton.

I think I'll run over to the Soros site and ask if he would like to donate to the link provided by philaguy (great job my friend) - there is a CONTACT area on the Soros site.

I would appreciate this more if my irony meter hadn't been broken by this administration...

You know, when I heard Cheney say that last night, I thought "I thought it was .org", but since most domains try to register .com, .org and .net, I figured, oh well, who cares. I'd been there before and I knew that there was more stuff against Bush/Cheney than against Kerry/Edwards.

I visited the site, hoping it would be something embarrassing like an adult entertainment site. I was so shocked and thrilled when I saw Soros' site pop up. I'm also very pleased that the spokesperson for factcheck.com said upfront that half the reason for redericting their website was to make a political statement. Brilliant.
