Al-Qaeda leaders in SA: CIA
Monday October 04, 2004 07:18 - (SA)

The United States' Central Intelligence Agency has named South Africa as one of the countries where a new tier of al-Qaeda leaders are hiding, according to a Sunday newspaper.

The newspaper said that a special investigation aired by the American television network CBS at the weekend revealed that a recent CIA report had identified 29 new leaders serving as a "second and third tier" in the al-Qaeda hierarchy stretching from Pakistan and Iraq to South Africa.

Lorna Daniels, spokesperson for the South African intelligence ministry, said the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) did not wish to comment at this stage.

David Martin, CBS's security affairs specialist, said that according to the CIA report Osama bin Laden remained at the top of al-Qaeda, followed by Ayman al-Zawahri, but there was now a second tier of 10 leaders operating in Iraq.

These included Abu Musab al-Zarkawi, the leader to whom some South African al-Qaeda operatives are allegedly linked.

7. Isn't it such a coinky dink, SA finding that huge oil reserve last year...
Yes. Quite the coinky dink indeed.

Like the coinky dink that the entire bushCartel are oilers.

Like the coinky dink that the US National Energy Policy under bush says America will use troops if necessary to ensure access to the world's oil.

Like the coinky dink that Iraq was one of the weakest nations in the world with the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world.

Like the coinky dink that bush didn't bother ordering Iraq's nuclear facilities secured until several weeks after Baghdad fell...but Iraq's oil fields and the Ministry of Oil were secured immediately.

Yes. All quite the coinky dinks.

8. This is not the 1st time we have heard this
It is never said who the South Africans are that are linked to terrorism.

I wonder if there are any links between Al Qaeda and people in the Apartheid regime.

9. Kasrils says CIA report is grossly exaggerated

October 04, 2004, 07:52

Ronnie Kasrils, the minister of intelligence, has described as grossly exaggerated reports that Al-Qaeda members are hiding in South Africa.

Kasrils was responding to a Sunday newspaper report quoting the American CIA as naming South Africa as one of the countries where a new tier of Al-Qaeda leaders are hiding.

....

The minister says they are investigating the substance of the reports. He says that people should not be unduly alarmed by the reports and should realise that government is not complacent in their actions against such allegations.
