Guantanamo has failed to prevent terror attacks
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 08:02 PM by JoFerret
http://www.guardian.co.uk/guantanamo/story/0,13743,1318702,00.html

Prisoner interrogations at Guantánamo Bay, the controversial US military detention centre where guards have been accused of brutality and torture, have not prevented a single terrorist attack, according to a senior Pentagon intelligence officer who worked at the heart of the US war on terror.
Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Christino, who retired last June after 20 years in military intelligence, says that President George W Bush and US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld have 'wildly exaggerated' their intelligence value.

Christino's revelations, to be published this week in Guantánamo: America's War on Human Rights, by British journalist David Rose, are supported by three further intelligence officials. Christino also disclosed that the 'screening' process in Afghanistan which determined whether detainees were sent to Guantánamo was 'hopelessly flawed from the get-go'.

It was performed by new recruits who had almost no training, and were forced to rely on incompetent interpreters. They were 'far too poorly trained to identify real terrorists from the ordinary Taliban militia'.

1. This story ties into...
Edited on Sat Oct-02-04 09:53 PM by dqueue
This story seems to tie into one of Sibel Edmonds' claims... this transcript from her major media debut quotes:

BRADLEY: (Voiceover) The FBI has conceded that some people in the language department are unable to adequately speak English or the language they're supposed to be translating. Kevin Taskasen was assigned to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to translate interrogations of Turkish-speaking al-Qaida members who had been captured after September 11. The FBI admits that he was not fully qualified to do the job.

Ms. EDMONDS: He neither passed the English nor the Turkish side of this language proficiency test.

BRADLEY: So that means if, for example, you had a--a terrorist detained at--at Guantanamo who had information about an attack being planned in the future against the United States, that person would not have been in a position to translate that?

Ms. EDMONDS: Correct. He wouldn't.

We need to hear the rest of Sibel's story

incompetence, mismanagement, ideology. All that hype and blather - all that fear and cheer and torture and terror - and for what?

Guantanamo is a huge stain on the legitimacy of the US.It is a human rights violation of enormous magnitude. And all for nothing.

6. Thanks for the extra link
This story needs to be known. All those human rights violations (to put it mildly) and all for nothing. A mess of potage.
