REPUBLICANS and Democrats spent weeks planning the first presidential debate in Miami on Thursday night. Emissaries of President Bush and John Kerry drew up a 32-page rule book governing everything from the temperature in the University of Miami debating chamber to the precise distance between the podiums, to the props each candidate could bring.

They overlooked just one detail. They forgot to determine what each man’s wife should wear. At the end of the night Laura Bush and Teresa Heinz Kerry bounded on to the stage wearing what, to the casual observer, appeared to be almost identical white suits.

In truth Mrs Bush’s suit was more champagne and Mrs Kerry’s ivory, but in the glare of the spotlights it was hard to tell.

7. The Bushes' really seem to have a fear of the Kerry's.

I noticed the chimp leaning away from Kerry every time Kerry was speaking at the debate. Now, look at Laura, leaning away from Teresa!

They really act like the John and Teresa are leppers or something.

8. Leaning back like that is a signal of aversion.

It can be dislike, fear, disagreement, mistrust, or plain dislike of other people. It could be any of those, a combination, or all of them. None of the Bushies seem very frriendly, in my opinion.

10. that was great. what was even better was that Teresa had to try so hard

to get Laura's attention so they could shake hands/embrace afterward, and that John and Teresa got that phenomenal scream and applause as they left the stage at the last moment (shown on cspan and CBS, but may have been edited out on other networks).
