Yahoo: Motorists Could Face $2/gal Gasoline Soon (!!!)
"U.S. drivers could again face $2 a gallon gasoline now that crude oil has topped a record $50 a barrel, government experts said on Tuesday."

"The average retail gasoline price is likely to rise above $2 per gallon in the next three weeks as the effect of higher crude oil prices filters through from refiners to drivers, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said."

At least that's my recollection. I can't remember the last time I saw it below $2/gal here in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Of course, I know they're talking about "average" prices and all, but geez, talk about a lame and misleading headline.

Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 08:28 PM by baldearg
I tanked up at Costco today for the bargain price of $2.21 - saved myself $1.30. Luckily I only needed 10 gallons of gasoline and I do not drive very much.

I feel sad for those working the shit jobs that pay zip up here and you end up now spending 1/2 of your crappy little paycheck on gasoline to fuel that old tanker you must drive out of lack of anything else just to drive to that shit job. Is it even worth going to work if you make the minimum wage, work part-time and drive 100 miles a day? I kinda don't think so anymore.

Man, this whole thing S U C K S.

16. This is certainly a failed Presidency....
... but I wouldn't let that truth lure me into believing an oilman's spin. Higher gas prices just mean bigger profits for both him and Bush.

The price of gas is an irrelevant measure of the success or failure of a Presidency. Would low gas prices be worth forfeiting our reputation around the globe? Would low gas prices be worth 1,000 lives? 2,000?

A better question might be "how much would you be willing to pay for gas if it meant we could eliminate our dependence on foreign energy sources?"

I'd agree, though, that high gas prices increase the pressure on the incumbent, and may have an influence on the election.

It jumped from $1.79 to $1.99 overnight last Thurs, but has been sliding down ever since, since stabilizing between $1.81-$1.87 much of the Twin Cities and St. Cloud. I'm afraid it will jump up pretty shortly though.

Right now, gas is $2 per gallon and a war.
The day it hits ten bucks a gallon, I'll celebrate. No, it won't make life easy. But I hate cars! Hate is a strong word, but I hate cars, and everything they've done to and for this society. You can flame me all you want. I'm a liberal; I'm a Democrat; And I know that gas has been artifially low priced. We just pay the balance in blood. Their blood. And that's the worst part.

I think we are a bunch of idiots with idiot leaders who cling onto this fossil fuel addiction like we are warriors in one of those Mel Gibson Mad Max movies (wow, I thought for a second I was the old Dennis Miller on a rant).

We should be well beyond the point of developing alternative fuels and propulsion yet we are actually at the point where a bigger, badder Hummer-like monstrosity is on the way.

So as I drive my Honda Civic today and look forward to my next car (hybrid for sure) I laugh as I pass the gas station and say go ahead and break the $2 barrier. Maybe then we'll wake up and smell the peak oil.

Even if you don't agree with me in the long term at least for the next month let's have the high price of gas be another thorn in Bush's side.

BOTH commodities can be (and ARE) ripoffs..

Milk prices ARE related to gas prices , ya know??

EVERYTHING we buy is related to gas prices..

Unless you are getting your veggies from your garden, and are raising your own "protein on the hoof", gas prices are a factor for us all..

Even that $4 shirt from China, gets to Walmart with the aid of gasoline..and you pay to drive there too.:(

51. Can BigOil keep the prices from hitting the roof until *after* election?
The price per barrel has been going up and up, but the pump prices were not necessarily following that trend recently.

I'm thinking BigOil is forgoing profits/break-even right now in order to see their boy Bush & Co. get "re-elected". If they can do their part and keep consumers (and the media which reports it *after* we start screaming) from b*tching about higher gas prices, then if Bush & Co. get "re-elected" they can run up the prices as much as they want. All thanks to Bush & Co's lassiez faire, see-no-evil attitude.

I just paid 81.9 pence per litre...which must be around $5.58 per US gallon.

I drive 100 miles a day to work and back.

Perhaps paying a reasonable price for oil may help focus everyone's minds on more fuel efficient cars and alternative transport methods.

However, it pisses me off that Bush and his friends are now probably making even more money than before due to these high oil prices.
