Syria May Be Subject to Attack, Israeli Deputy Minister Says
Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Syria may be subject to Israeli strikes to prevent terrorist attacks against Israel, Deputy Defense Minister Zeev Boim said, calling the neighboring country an ``innkeeper'' for terrorists.

Boim spoke a day after a car bomb in Damascus killed a top leader in the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the European Union. Syria blamed Israel for the killing and said it bore responsibility for the consequences, AFP reported, citing unidentified officials in Damascus.

``Syria is acting as an innkeeper giving shelter to terrorist headquarters,'' Boim said in an interview with Israel Radio. ``As a result Syria isn't immune to any operations we take to prevent terror attacks.''

One Israeli civilian and five security personnel were killed in attacks by Palestinians last week. Last year, Israel bombed what it said was a ``terrorist training camp'' in Syria. Syria has denied Israeli claims that it gives Hamas and other Palestinian groups free rein.

While Boim didn't say whether Israel was behind the Damascus bombing, he said Israeli operations on Syrian territory were justified. The newspaper Haaretz, citing unidentified Israeli security officials, said Israel was involved in the assassination of Ezzedine Sheikh Khalil, described as a senior Hamas official.

Israel detonated a CAR BOMB in a civilian area of Damascus to kill a Hamas leader?! All the helicopter gunships must have been busy killing Palestinian civilians elsewhere....

12. Yes, it's almost as good as ...
... an Israeli soldier getting killed by a bullet isn't it?

:eyes:

(Still a stunning lack of condemnation for a terrorist act in another
sovereign country ... why am I not surprised?)

2. Any specific "Inn" that the Israelis can identify as terrorist....
..."bed and breakfasts" in Syria? I suppose that the Syrian women and children that are caught in the bombing of these "terrorist inns" are part of the service help, housekeepers, busboys, servers, kitchen staff, etc.

11. collateral damage is to be expected when engaging in preemption
collateral damage and intelligence failures are both justifiable with the precedent set by the * preemption policy.

Press alarm at assassination in Syria

Israel's assassination of the Hamas leader Izz El-Deen Sheikh Khalil in Syria is widely seen by the Middle East press as a veiled warning to Damascus, which Israel has accused of supporting terrorists, rather than retaliation to Hamas.

Though many Israeli commentators believe the move justified, some question if it was wise. Middle East and pan-Arab papers are angered by what one paper calls Israel's "attempt to export its internal crises" to the Arab world, and one Palestinian commentator calls on Syria to respond by turning the other cheek.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The message Israel delivered is that Israel is willing to go up a notch in its war on terror. The price is worth it politically... Israel showed it is capable of staging this assassination within Syria.

Commentary by Arieh O'Sullivan in Israel's Jerusalem Post

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The more Israel's example is followed, rather than pilloried, the closer we will be to victory over the jihad that threatens people everywhere.

Israel's Jerusalem Post

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The assassination was not just directed against a terrorist organization, it was a message to Damascus in response to its increasing support for terror organizations. The question is how will Damascus respond, if it responds. It is very unlikely that Syria's leaders will seek open and direct military confrontation with Israel. But Syria's ability to respond has usually manifested itself in indirect action against Israel.

9. I presume you likewise don't object to Palestinian self-defense....
Or are Zionist car bombs-- or missiles fired into civilian crowds-- more justified than Palestinian self-defense against Israeli aggression?

and the zionists bomb their neighbor's capital for it.. Such provocative acts suggest other intentions than "defense".

10. aaahh!
And where is the US response that attacks should not be made on foreign soil without first going before the UN?

Oh yeah, I guess Bush proved to the world we (and our allies) don't need to do that anymore...

13. When will people in the US governmnt admit that Israel is the biggest
terrorist nation in the world second only to ourselves?

It's time for America to think about America's interests first and not Israel's interest first.
