Conservatives angry at Schwarzenegger

The governor has grated on traditionalists by supporting gay rights, AIDS and gun-control legislation.
By Beth Fouhy
The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Rev. Lou Sheldon wasn't thrilled when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation requiring health insurance policies to offer equal coverage to partners of gay and lesbian workers. Sheldon, a conservative activist and president of the Anaheim-based Traditional Values Coalition, grew more upset after Schwarzenegger approved legislation allowing hypodermic needles to be sold with no prescription as a way to slow the spread of AIDS.

But then, when Schwarzenegger approved a bill Wednesday to expand the definition of hate crimes -- which conservatives fear will lead to prosecutions of those who condemn homosexuality -- Sheldon declared war.

"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger must not be too troubled by what he's called 'girlie men' because he's just signed a bill into law that maintains 'sex' in California to include drag queens, cross-dressers and transsexuals," Sheldon announced in a written statement. "Schwarzenegger has sided with the homosexual and drag queen lobby in muddying the biological realities of male and female."

I think it my be pretty fun to be a lobbiest for the "homosexuals and drag queens". What would office attire be?

Sorry I know it is a serious subject but for Sheldon to say that Schwarzenegger is siding with the homosexual and drag queen lobby that was the first thing that popped in my head

19. I thought the same thing...
Homosexual and drag queen lobby? If these people didn't cause so much hatred and viciousness, it would be funny. I can't laugh long, though, because after scanning through DU this morning, I really am afraid of what this country is becoming.

The irony is that by the time the right-wing nuts completely take over, the America I was born in, and have lived in for all of my 61 years, will no longer be America. They screech about patriotism while destroying the country. The neocons and fundies are the enemy, not us.

26. The Golden Rule sums up the Ten Commandments
Jesus said the two most important commandments a person can follow is to love God with all your heart and to treat others the way you yourself want to be treated. Taken together, the Golden Rule sums up the Ten Commandments.

They knew his history and his stance on gay rights, gun control, etc etc. They backed him simply because he was a Republican and he could win. They elected him, they can live with him.

12. it's true ... Repukes just see "R" after the name
But as these southwest Virginians watch this week's Republican National Convention, many said, the speech most are interested in hearing is tonight's address by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a self-styled moderate. That's because from afar, Schwarzenegger looks to many very conservative Republicans like one of their own.

"I like him. I wish we had him here in Virginia," said Polly Johnson, a 78-year-old retiree who sits on the state Republican central committee and helped organize the event this month. "He's such a strong conservative on the issues."

Schwarzenegger, in fact, supports abortion rights, favors a number of gun control measures and has said he has no personal objections to gay marriage. Asked about the governor's statements on such matters, Johnson said she hadn't heard them and expressed disbelief: "Deep down, he just comes across as a conservative."...

34. actually, they backed him because they confused
his movie characters with the real man... they thought he'd go in with guns blazing, SUV's plowing up the earth to avenge all the wrongs they perceived Gray Davis doing--and now that that hasn't happened, they're all pissed off at him for not being the character they thought he really was.

While I don't agree with a lot of what he's doing, he's at least showing that he's got a broader view than the narrowminded 'man of gawd' will ever have.

at the end of some candidate's name.

But The Fact REMAINS, folks.

A LOT of Arnold's appeal here in California, beyond just the movie star crap, is that he is a MODERATE. Repeat after me, all you knuckledraggers. Arnold is a MODERATE. Which, frankly, is what a true Republican (NOT republi-CON) is designed to be. The laissez-faire attitude that they seem to want to confine strictly to big business these days USED TO extend to people's personal lives and personal rights and personal issues as well. Like - when "get the government off your back" REALLY meant something to the average guy. Now, these people still want to "get the government off your backs" as long as those backs belong to Big Business and the purported Military Industrial Complex. And when they've removed the government from those particular backs, it has to go somewhere, doesn't it? Well, then, how 'bout people's BEDROOMS? And CONSCIENCES? And ladies, how 'bout those nether regions of yours, too? We should shove the government way up in there, too. Frankly I'm surprised they haven't tried to annex the human uterus and declare it collectively as our 51st state.

But Arnold IS a MODERATE. He has always been a MODERATE. Indeed, I find him preferable to a LOT of republi-CONS paraded in front of us across the national stage. He's the ONLY republi-CON who could do it. If a more conservative candidate had had any traction, THAT person would have carried the day. And none of them did, did they?

No, this was simply a quick-n-dirty "smash and grab." They wanted the California governor's office to be republi-CON. Period. ANY republi-CON would do, just as long as that precious "r" came after the candidate's name. Just as many of us here feel about bush, they woulda voted for a ham sandwich if it had had an "r" after it. It was ABGD - ANYONE BUT GRAY DAVIS. And when Arnold indicated he was interested, that was all they needed to hear, because they knew his marquee value alone would be worth multiple millions in campaign advertising and free news coverage. Anytime Arnold even farted, the camera crews were all there, panting heavily, fighting for front-row seats. ALL they cared about, out here, was getting rid of Gray Davis, since they weren't able to do it legitimately in the previous election (when, mind you, they put up that walking, talking embarrassment bill simon against Davis, and Davis beat him fair and square). And simon came back during the recall to try again, and wound up pulling out. Same thing for darrell issa, who they just used for his money to get the recall campaign off the ground before they summarily discarded him. They KNEW they wouldn't win with him either. Why? Because he's too fuckin' CONSERVATIVE. Same thing with bill simon, and besides, he already had LOSER-smell all over him.

Here, they thought all they were gonna need was just one more republi-CON in control, and they didn't bother to read the fine print - about where Arnold really stands on a lot of issues. And now it's come back to bite them in their intolerant, extremist, closeminded, malevolent, bastardly backsides.

Besides, Arnold's probably hedging his bets - he may have to go back to Hollywood at some point if his political life crashes and burns, and he may not want everybody pissed off with him. It could also be that he's got too many friends he values, who can green-light films, and who just might be gay, or perhaps who've had to get an abortion - whom he'd rather not screw over (and their huge campaign checks don't bounce, either). Arnold may realize that his political leanings won't maintain him as the republi-CONS' darling forever.

It's kind of nice to hear these crybabies whining now. Whatsa matter, didn't get the "right" republi-CON, after all? Arnold spoiling your little petty party?

41. Not only that, but, when Colin Powell spoke at the gop CONvention
in San Diego, awhile back, he got booed by the audience when he said he was pro-choice. He was supposedly their star performer and they booed him when he had the nerve to step out of line. Right there on TV. You could hear it CLEARLY.

Yes, they ARE ding dongs. They assume if you've got an "r" after your name, you're one of the true believers. Arnold does NOT fit that mold. No liberal slander here. Just facts. But they THINK it's liberal slander. I guess that's what facts are, anymore... (Sigh)

14. I dislike Schwarzenegger, but I think the democrats have missed
an opportunity to use him to foment some serious division within the republican party. I have always thought that democrats should praise Arnold and ask "Why can't all republicans be like Arnold? He is a uniter rather than a divider like president Bush." I think Arnold could be used by democrats to drive either the moderate republicans or the Reich wing fundamentalist republicans out of the GOP, or at least create lots of dissension within the party. I say all of this because I consider the Reich wing fundamentalist wing of the GOP to be a grave danger to this country and one of the most important parts of the republican base in many States.
