Deportations anger advocates

Haitian activists in South Florida expressed outrage Friday as the news spread that immigration officials have deported 17 Haitian migrants despite the destruction in that country caused by Jeanne, a hurricane now approaching Florida.

-

The tragedy in their homeland has shaken the local Haitian community, galvanizing it into action. On Friday, as community activists gathered for a news conference at the Haitian Women of Miami office, a stream of Haitian families brought medical supplies, clothes and canned goods for Jeanne's victims in Haiti.

The news of the deportations prompted community leaders to step up their ongoing campaign to secure so-called Temporary Protected Status for Haitians, an immigration benefit designed for countries in crisis -- those devastated by natural disasters or civil strife.

This is disgusting and shameful. :puke:

2. racial prejudice
Damn, it makes me mad, and I'm not black. I don't understand how this sort of policy, this callousness toward the desperation of people, obviously based on racial prejudice, goes on. Colin Powell should be moving heaven and earth to change US policy toward blacks worldwide but as far as I know, this isn't even on his radar. Can any black person here tell me how well known these policies are in the US black communities?

5. Note that the vast majority of Cuban migrants are white
Black Cubans prefer Cuba's integrated and mixed society.

So do I.

Been there, seen it.
