Downer backs foreign pre-emptive strikes

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said it would be acceptable for another country to launch a pre-emptive strike on terrorist networks in Australia if Australia did not take action itself.

The Opposition immediately labelled Mr Downer's comments as lunacy.
But Mr Downer said countries were entitled to defend themselves.

Asked on Darwin radio if he would expect another country to take pre-emptive action on Australian soil, Mr Downer said: "Absolutely, by the way, absolutely."

"If the Indonesians rang us up and said, 'There's a terrorist group in the Kimberleys who are planning to launch an attack on Kupang', and we said, 'Well we don't really care; that's your problem, pal and we're not going to do anything about it', and they sent an F-16 over and bombed the terrorist group, you could understand that," Mr Downer added.
