Hepatitis breaking out in Iraqi cities(also typhoid fever)

BAGHDAD, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Iraq's health ministry says the collapse of water and sewage systems has caused a hepatitis E outbreak, the New York Times said Friday.

Especially lethal for pregnant women, this type of hepatitis has been found in a Baghdad slum known as Sadr City and in Mahmudiya, about 35 miles south of Baghdad, a health ministry spokesman said.

Sadr City has at least 155 suspected cases; Mahmudiya has at least 60 suspected cases.

The World Health Organization is rushing hepatitis E testing kits, water purification tablets, informational brochures and other materials to Iraq to help with the outbreaks.

Other public health threats are looming because of unsanitary water.
