and our so-called leaders . . . only 17 negative votes? . . . for someone who has called himself unqualified? . . . if only for appearances (i.e. appearing to be the opposition), they should have fought this one . . . it boggles the mind . . .

In so many ways there is really no difference between the parties.

Certainly in the area of courage of ones' convictions.

9. from the NY Times
Mr. Rockefeller, acknowledging that Mr. Goss had pledged in his confirmation hearing to set partisanship aside as director, said in today's debate: "I must vote on his record. I cannot vote on his promise."But Mr. Rockefeller added, "I sincerely hope Porter Goss will prove my vote wrong."

Another Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Ron Wyden of Oregon, made it clear he was opposing the nominee with some reluctance. "Porter Goss is a good man and a good Congressman," Senator Wyden said. Mr. Wyden said he could give Mr. Goss the benefit of the doubt on his pledge to be nonpartisan but did not think Mr. Goss would push for change. His fellow Floridians, Senators Bob Graham and Bill Nelson, were among the Democrats who expressed respect and affection for Mr. Goss.

Other Democrats who voted for Mr. Goss included Tom Daschle of South Dakota, the minority leader; Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware; Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut; Russell Feingold of Wisconsin; Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, both of California; and Charles E. Schumer of New York.

Besides Mr. Rockefeller and Mr. Wyden, Democrats who opposed the nominee included Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, Carl Levin of Michigan, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, Hillary Clinton of New York and Frank R. Lautenberg and Jon S. Corzine, both of New Jersey.

When will these spineless Dems learn you can only know what a Pub will do by what he has done, never by what he promises at a confimation hearing. How stupid can they be? Look at Ashcroft!!! These guys always promise anything when they are being confirmed.

has serious judgment problems. That shit about "oh its the presidents prerogative so therefore I must confirm" is rubbish. If Bush nominated Satan would he also vote to confirm him?

And the patriot act and IWR were going to pass, with or without his vote. When he actually could have made a difference (ashcroft)he punked out.

selected is #1.

Now that Goss has been confirmed, God help us if Bu$h gets 4 more years.

We will have our own Gestapo/KGB arresting dissenters and other innocent people.

America is in deep shit. We absolutely must make sure that John Kerry is elected.

Goss is a very dangerous person and an enemy of liberty in America.

It may actually be better this way. He has no experience at all managing a large institution and he has proven that his knowledge of intelligence and world affairs is nil. Thus, the effectiveness of a belligerent foreign policy will be blunted.

After listening to all the hearings and learning of this dude's background in the senate/congress. His ramblings and rude remarks, his temper, his partisanship et al. I thought, are you guys kidding me? You can't allow this jackass become head of CIA or anything else.

If Bush got elected...Goss would do HIS bidding. If Kerry is elected Goss could NOT be trusted to do the right thing. It's just too big of a risk.

I was sucking air for a second... I should have known better. DAMN, he does make me proud. When we get Obama elected in November there will be another Dem in that Senate that I trust--Thankfully!

If any of the no votes were your Senator you need to send an email of support. I certainly intend to.

Laura

On edit, My thank you to Sen Durbin:

Sen Durbin,

I wanted to thank you for your no vote on the Goss confirmation today. I feel he is ill suited to the job and that you (and the 16 other Dems) deserve a huge thank you from the American public. I always count on you to stand up for us all, and you have not disappointed me...

Best of luck to you--and you have no idea how proud I am that you are my Senator! When we get Obama elected this November Illinois Dems will have even more to be proud of!

So, maybe he was going to vote no anyway, but I feel better that I wrote him and expressed my feelings.

Now I'll write him a thank you note.

Still, we are so fucked. If Bush wins again, we're fucked. If Kerry wins and keeps Goss, we're fucked. I mean we as a country, and we as DU'ers. If Bush wins, I'll stop posting anything political anywhere. I'm already paranoid. Shit.

I won't feel good about a Kerry win until and unless he throws Goss out on his America-hating, not-wanting-to-investigate-Plame, against-the-9/11-Commission ass.

54. Any Dem in contested race in 2004 voted no
Why did progressive senators like Boxer, Murray and Feingold vote for Goss? They could not afford to vote against Goss and have their opponent beat them over the head with this vote if a terrorist act occurs between now and nov 2nd. They are surely hoping for a Kerry victory which will remove Goss from the CIA. If Bush wins, they have bigger things to worry about.
