BAGHDAD - A day of widespread violence in Iraq left at least 60 people dead and hundreds wounded, as a series of apparently co-ordinated mortar strikes hit central Baghdad and U.S. forces retaliated with helicopter fire.

Some 37 Iraqis were killed in Baghdad, and dozens wounded. Street battles also raged in Ramadi and Hilla, near Baghdad.

Unconfirmed reports also spoke of a battle in the northern town of Tal Afar near the Syrian border, in which about 50 people were said to have died.

None of those reported dead on Sunday were U.S. soldiers, though several Americans were lightly wounded.
