LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Los Angeles judge on Tuesday refused to throw out a lawsuit against Unocal Corp. over human rights abuses during the building of a pipeline in Myanmar.
The ruling by Superior Court Judge Victoria Chaney means the closely watched case will likely proceed to trial despite Unocal's arguments that the plaintiffs had no viable legal theories left.
"This means that this case will go to trial and that Unocal will stand accountable in a California court for the atrocities that it allowed to be committed," said Dan Stormer, an attorney for the plaintiffs.
But Unocal attorney Dan Petrocelli said that the oil giant may still argue on other grounds that the case should not go to trial and would consider asking an appeals court to overturn Chaney's ruling.
