New poll shows Bush bounce fading - CSM/TIPP
http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0915/p02s01-uspo.html

By Liz Marlantes | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor

WASHINGTON – More than a week after the Republican National Convention - and in the wake of new questions about President Bush's National Guard service - the race for the White House is once again tightening, just as pollsters and strategists for both campaigns had predicted it would.

A new Monitor/TIPP poll finds Mr. Bush and Sen. John Kerry currently tied among likely voters nationwide, with each receiving 47 percent of the vote in a two-man race, and each receiving 46 percent when independent candidate Ralph Nader is added to the ballot. The poll of 674 likely voters was conducted Sept. 7-12, and has a margin of error of 4 percent.

Immediately following the GOP convention, polls showed Bush with a lead of anywhere from 7 to 11 points. But that bounce seems to be fading, as more recent polls cut Bush's lead down to 4 or 5 points (though an AP poll this week still showed Bush up by 8). Analysts attribute the shift in large part to a natural tightening as the convention glow wears off. It may also reflect a more recent series of challenges for the president - from the renewed controversy over whether he fulfilled his National Guard commitments during Vietnam to the escalating violence in Iraq as US fatalities passed the 1,000 mark. Senator Kerry has ramped up his attacks, too, focusing this week on issues such as the expiration of the assault weapons ban, and healthcare.

Still, Bush retains certain distinct advantages as he and Senator Kerry head into the final stretch of the race.

1. Good news, good news...
and I trust the CS Monitor.

Keep it up. Now's the time Kerry! We've been waiting and waiting, and people have said "calm down... it's all part of the plan" for a while. I think now is the time to let loose and really get moving.

5. Maybe I'm just stupid...
I realize it's been a long time since my last statistics class, but I swear I remember reading that it took about 1100 people to accurately reflect a larger population.

7. I think this poll is good news. However...
When we all say that polls that show Bush with a large lead in certain states are complete bullshit, maybe that's correct to a certain extent. But I think that this is the homestretch - less than 50 days left. Instead of just shrugging it off as bullshit news, why dont we do something about it. Get young people to vote for Kerry; I have articles are how college costs will skyrocket and how Pell Grants are in serious jeopardy in the 2006 proposed Bush budget. It's great to say that all these polls are bullshit until comes election day when Bush even may have a less than 1% lead in a state and win it. We need to get out there.

8. I feel sorry for the freeps over at Freak Republic
We progressives are used the upward struggle of enlighten thought. However the freeps are more used to gaming the system with unlimited funds and toxic hyperbole. When they fix something it's suppose to stay fixed, dammit.

Hey, did y'all just hear a couple of troll heads pop?

then I read Yahoo News and see Bush gaining ground in battleground States, and it scares the bejeesus out of me. It is like a roller coaster.

10. This is the second poll in 24 hours showing this race beginning
to tighten. The Rasmussen poll shows also shows the at a .7% difference. Three polls (especially the Investor's Business Daily poll - because that paper is very tough on Dems and Democratic policies) showing a dramatic tightening, constitutes the beginning of a trend.

19. The bounce was like a rubber ball
no matter how hard you slam it to the ground, it always starts decending with more and more with each boucne till it stops bouncing and hit's rock bottom.

Bush is toast.

22. bush* Lead Collapses! THAT should be the headlines!
Kerry ahead by 5-7 points - it's a "slight lead" or a "small bounce".

bunkerboy allegedly ahead - it's a "commanding lead" & signs of "Kerry campaign in freefall".

Just love the impartiality and fairness of the whore media!
