Global population goals suffer: UNFPA (New world population report)

With donor countries not meeting their commitments, lack of resources is becoming a major stumbling block in reaching global goals on population and reproductive health, a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report said on Wednesday.

Donor countries have given only about half the agreed amount, that is 3.1 billion dollars a year rather than 6.1 billion dollars a year, needed to implement the Programme of Action.

Though fertility is falling in many regions, world population will increase from the existing 6.4 billion to 8.9 billion by 2050, the report said. The 50 poorest countries will triple in size to 1.7 billion people, it added.

The report said more than 350 million couples still lack access to a full range of family planning services while complications of pregnancy and childbirth remain a leading cause of death and illness among women. Each year, 529,000 women die mostly from preventable causes.
