Utahn killed in Iraq: The state's latest casualty is recalled as a ''quiet, gentle soul'' who loved books and was kind to his younger siblings

By Mark Eddington
and Dawn House
The Salt Lake Tribune

SPANISH FORK - As friends offered condolences on the death of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Cesar F. Machado-Olmos in Iraq, his mother had a single request: Would it be possible, perhaps, to send over a few American flags to grace her front yard?

"I was so proud of him. He was a very good son," the Marine's mother, Patricia Acosta, said Tuesday. "He had lots of dreams, but they are all nothing now. He was too young to die."

...

Machado-Olmos died when the Humvee in which he was riding hit sand and rolled. The Pentagon called his death a noncombat-related vehicle accident.

The Marine, however, was performing a combat-related task in a war zone, said Maj. Jennifer Butler, family support officer at Camp Williams.

1. So his hummer rolls over when the convoy is attacked,
but it's not a combat related death? Why? Because their vehicle wasn't hit?

WTF kind of bullshit is that?

4. Sorry for the Families Loss
I'm sorry for the families loss, but don't people think how their actions may have lead to their family members death. The mother wants American flags for her lawn. People die from too much flag waving. I bet they were very pleased that their son was in the Marines serving his country. They unfortunately helped send their son to his death I would bet. I know this is harsh, but we need to stop this patriotic shit that kills our family members!

5. I Agree with you.
My spouse use to say to me, "That our boys should serve their country". One night about a year ago I told her about the samething. I said "that it was a shame she would want to send our/My sons to fight any kind of war. And that any parent that thinks its O.K. for their kids to die invain havee to kill their kids." At first she was shock, but when she saw that I meant it she backed off about My Sons Serving in the Arm Forces. Screw that crap.

6. Funny that so many (not all) military families will continue to support *
I just had an exchange of posts on Usenet with someone whose "entire family" and "all of our friends" are voting for * even though her husband is readying himself for his second tour of duty in Iraq.

Her reasoning for voting for him? The family and friends of men and women who have lost their lives in Iraq don't want to feel like their loved ones have died in vain.

I was aghast. I didn't want to seem disrespectful to her, but all I could think of was that this must be what so many of *'s followers believe - continue, headstrong, in the wrong direction because otherwise the bubble might burst and we'll all realize we were duped into this war...and Johnny and Jane died in vain, so dammit, we want others to die after them so that we can prove some innane point. Dying for NO GOOD REASON rather than opening their eyes and taking a stand against this immoral occupation and war.

8. I'd call it nationalism, not patriotism
There's a difference, you know. Nationalism is patriotism gone wild (perverse) -- including the kind of militarism we've got masquerading as "patriotism."

And please don't dump on the grieving families. I don't care if they voted for Bush and will STILL vote for Bush this next time. The death of their sons is NOT a political event.

7. My deepest condolences to the family
I hope that covering her yard with flags brings her some peace -- although it didn't work for my family.
