Troop rotation under way to swap nearly 40,000 troops

CAMP PENDLETON ---- Stepped-up American airstrikes on Iraqi cities and tough talk by U.S. officials in Washington may have set the timer for a military showdown in Iraq that could involve tens of thousands of local Marines sometime in the next few months.
While most of the approximately 20,000 local Marines who deployed to western Iraq in February and March are due to return home over the coming few weeks, they are being replaced by an almost equal number of fresh troops, mostly from Camp Pendleton, Miramar and Twentynine Palms.
The rotation of troops has spurred a series of homecomings and deployments on local Marine bases.
The fresh wave of troops heading to Iraq could soon bear an especially heavy burden.
U.S. officials have said several towns now dominated by insurgents must be made safe for residents to vote before the national elections planned for January.
