LAS VEGAS — President Bush lavished praise on National Guard forces Tuesday for their service in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he steered clear of the debate over his own Guard service during the Vietnam War.
Speaking to 4,000 delegates and exhibitors at the National Guard Association's national convention, Bush touched on his Guard experience only by noting that he is one of 19 presidents, including Abraham Lincoln and Harry Truman, to have served in the citizen-soldier force. "I am proud to be one of them," Bush said firmly, winning a roaring standing ovation from the crowd.
Rather than answer Democrats' questions about whether he fulfilled his Guard obligations or used family connections to avoid active duty, Bush alternated between lauding Guard members' devotion to country and questioning whether John Kerry is tough and constant enough to be commander in chief.<snip>
