LuLu's back (Maine student deported to Taiwan)

FARMINGTON -- Seven months after she was deported for writing paid columns in the Franklin Journal, Taiwanese student Huei-Ju "LuLu" Yen is back in Farmington.

Yen, who flew back from Taiwan on Sept. 10, spent the past week getting in touch with the community she celebrated in her columns, before her deportation from a Detroit airport in February.

Immigration officials banned Yen from the country for five years after they found a $100 check from the Franklin Journal, which was to pay Yen for expenses incurred while writing her columns. At the time, Yen was on her way back to Farmington, where she was enrolled as a part-time student and aspiring to be a journalist, after a brief vacation in Taiwan.

But Yen's adopted community -- centered on a small army of devotees to her columns -- rallied around her in an outpouring of support, prompting Maine's U.S. senators to put up a joint five-month fight to secure a visa in July for her return.
