CNN: Teachers lose tax breaks for class expenses
http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/09/16/school.supplies.ap/index.html

The losing the tax breaks isn't the worst part of this story, it really is the fact of how much teachers reach into their own pockets to pay for things for their students. A friend of mine is an art teacher, and she's even had to buy paints, paper, and things like that for the kids, because the school supplies so little.

We need to increase school budgets nationwide, we need total education reform.

2. Uh huh
And all so that Dick Cheney could clear another $90,000 last year. What in the hell does Dick Cheney need with another tax cut? How much money is enough for him? And don't tell me he "earned" the money, because he keeps running around telling everyone who will listen (and sadly, they all seem to be on the news outlets) that he has no financial interest in Halliburton. The extra $175,000 he pocketed last year from them was just, uh, you know, just because he's such a swell guy!

Meanwhile, teachers go out of pocket to be sure their classrooms are stocked, and can't even deduct the expenses from their taxes. But Dick Cheney can write off his duck hunting trip with Fat Tony -- or charge it off as an office expense. Either way, you know it isn't being paid for out of his pocket.

Well teachers? Any of you want to vote for Bush/Cheney again this time around?

3. There's a way to help, if you read the article
One Web site, iLoveSchools.com, matches teachers around the country with donors. The nonprofit organization, launched in July, said it has received about $90,000 in donations.

I give to my kids' teachers (usually Staples gift certificates) but they are in a well-off district and the money would be better off sent to the poorer schools.

4. I've chatted with a lot of teachers,
and all of them say the same thing. A lot of their personal income goes to supply the kids with supplies. That's sad. Teachers don't make enough as it is and then they have to fork over more just to ensure the kids have what they need.
And all bush* can say is "Don't worry about it!"
Leave no kid behind? Yeah, right. Only if they are rich.

5. My best friend was a Teacher.
Her husband made her quite and I don't blame him at all. Hell the second most important jobs in the world is a Teachers. They have our kid 8 hrs. and they get pay shit and they (teachers) pay for alot of stuff out of there own pockets. My best Friend even paid for some of hers "students" shoes. Now what up with that. So Yes we need total education reform, but that not going to happen until parents get piss and mad.

1st. most important job is being a parents.

7. They're so intent on destroying public education they want to discourage
even this?

That's amazing, because it conflicts with their other goal of shrinking government revenues. Generally, they love tax deductions.

I guess people who teach aren't in the class of people they want to help anymore. Not enough millionaire teachers.
