Rwanda opposition rejects poll

The main opposition candidate in Rwanda's presidential election, Faustin Twagiramungu, on Tuesday rejected poll results which gave President Paul Kagame as the winner, and called for new elections, said Twagiramungu's aide.

"These elections were not free. There was a lot of fraud. A lot of people were forced to vote for Kagame and there was nothing transparent in the procedure," said the aide, who asked not to be named.

He complained also that only observers from Kagame's Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) party, the former Tutsi rebel movement that had held power in the central African country since 1994, had been allowed to follow the vote-counting procedure, begun on Monday after voting ended.
