WASHINGTON, D.C. - University of Massachusetts professor David M. Mednicoff received a national award Thursday for his course "Explaining terror" in which he teaches about the Sept. 11 tragedy.
Among those who chose to award the professor were family members of 9/11 victims. Mednicoff said that he developed his course because he saw that students were shaken by 9/11 and wanted to help them to understand why it happened.
Mednicoff said he believes that people ought to understand the importance of an informed citizenry.
"We are perceived by many people in the world, sometimes unfairly, and perhaps sometimes fairly, as being different than we think that we are," Mednicoff said. "We need to pay attention to what our government is doing here and abroad so we can avoid to some extent the horrible events that 9/11 draws home to us."
In his award winning course, offered last semester - and to be offered again this semester - Mednicoff wants students to explore different political explanations for 9/11 and to come to their own conclusions about why it happened.
"There's a lot of misinformation
," Mednicoff said.
