On Eve Of 9/11 Anniversary, Al- Qaeda Vows US Defeat

DUBAI, Sept 9 (AFP)

Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri vowed in a statement broadcast two days before the anniversary of the September 11 attacks that the United States would be defeated in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"The American defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan has become just a question of time, God willing" Zawahiri said in a videotape shown on Al-Jazeera television. ..

Zawahiri last appeared in a video, alongside bin Laden, almost a year ago to the day.

In Thursday`s statement he boasted that Al- Qaeda`s mujahedeen were in control of "the entire east and south of Afghanistan" with the support of the people.

"The Americans are dug into their trenches and refuse to come out to face the mujahedeen, despite their provocations by bombing and besieging them." ..
