LATimes-Ellsberg Urges Insiders to Leak Iraq Info

WASHINGTON — Daniel Ellsberg, the former Defense Department official who leaked the Pentagon Papers during the Vietnam war, is urging government insiders to provide similar classified documents about the invasion of Iraq.

Joined by other whistle-blowers and former government employees, Ellsberg said at a news conference Thursday that claims of government deception and lies have "little credibility" unless supported by documentary evidence, which often is available only in classified materials.

In a memo to current government employees, Ellsberg and other former government officials said federal insiders owe a "higher allegiance" to the Constitution, the public and American soldiers in Iraq than to their government bosses.

The memo acknowledged that whistle-blowers risk personal setbacks, such as losing their jobs, but urged them to act nonetheless. "You may save many Americans from being lied to death," it said.

2. Nothing sticks to Bush
If the White house beat reporters caught him doing lines in the Oval office he would spin his way out of it.

There was a time when nothing stuck to Nixon, too.
I hope someone will heed Ellsberg's call. Problem is, they're a lot more careful about who has access to stuff these days. Still, information does get leaked.

4. i'm about twenty pages away from finishing ellsberg's book..
Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon papers. It's amazing the parallels one can draw from Vietnam and this krap we're seeing now. I would highly recommend reading it.

5. ...and it's amazing how the same people are still up to their tricks!
Thank you to Daniel Ellsberg and people like him! I hope that others will come forward.

Remember we would never have heard about Abu Ghraib if a soldier hadn't come forward.

I'll never lose faith that someone will have the gumption to bring that coWard down, if necessary, for the good of our country.

7. Ellsberg organized whistleblowers today in Washington
In 1971, Ellsberg leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times and the Washington Post. The 7,000 page document exposed the true story behind U.S. decision making in the Vietnam War. He was charged with 12 felony counts posing a possible sentence of 115 years. The charges were dismissed in 1973 on grounds of governmental misconduct against him.
