Edwards surprises truck stop patrons before leaving Maine
HERMON, Maine — Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards was back on the campaign trail Thursday morning with a surprise visit to Dysart´s Truck Stop in Hermon. Edwards went from table to table at the truck stop´s restaurant, shaking hands and introducing himself to startled diners.

Disabled veteran Michael Clark of Albion expressed concerns to Edwards about cuts in the Department of Veterans Affairs. "He says we definitely got to clean it up," Clark said.

Ralph Gillespie took a photograph of his wife, Linda, with Edwards. The Gillespies are from St. Clairsville, Ohio, and were traveling through Maine in a motor home after a trip to Canada. "I said ´good luck,´" Linda Gillespie said.

. . .<earlier that day>

He was introduced by Gov. John Baldacci and author Stephen King, a university alumnus who described the Bush administration as the "most dangerous and unpleasant bunch" to occupy the White House since the Nixon years. King said he was "not a political animal. I´m here because I think this is the most important election of my lifetime," King said from a platform set up in the campus mall.

5. Dysart's is about as Maine as you can get.
It's sort of the steam-table and coffee-urn Vatican.

"I´m here because I think this is the most important election of my lifetime," King said from a platform set up in the campus mall.
