Serbs in Dispute Over Darwin Vs. Divine (evolution dropped for creationism
BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro -- Charles Darwin's evolution theory is out of Serb schools. The Bible is in.

The education minister's decision this week to drop the evolution theory from elementary school classes in favor of creationism has triggered outrage among scientists, opposition parties and liberal groups.

Education Minister Ljiljana Colic told primary school teachers in a memo earlier this week to ignore an existing chapter in eighth-grade biology textbooks that says life on Earth evolved through natural selection.

She said Darwin's theory is "dogmatic," adding that it will remain in schoolbooks -- "but will not be taught" -- pending a general revision of the curriculum expected

1. Did some Kansans suddenly move to Serbia in the last year or so?

Yes, "dogmatic" Darwin, as opposed to adaptable and intellectually rigorous Christian doctrine. Whatever.

2. The education minister's decision has been overruled today...

...after pressure from the public. Darwin's back in the curriculum. I only have a link in Serbo-Croatian, no English link yet. But it doesn't surprise me -- religion has never been very popular in Serbia as a teaching, but more as a symbollic part of nationalism. Very few people there actually go to church or pray.

6. Hey,slavkomae , because of your nick and the fact that you...
Understand Serbo-Croatian,I guess you have roots in ex-Yugoslavia so do you still have family over there ? I'm curious. The only things I know from that part of the world comes from what I've read about the wars in the last decade so I'm pretty ignorant about Serbo-Croatians.

PS: Your post is a really good news.

9. Yeah,
all but my immediate family are still there. I actually spent the last summer there, recording an album with my band. Much cheaper studio time than here, and it was a blast...

4. On a similar tangent...
The number one reason to get rid of Bush is he's a creationist. His appocolyptic fundy worldview paints everything he does.

5. Darwin's theory is dogmatic ?
And The Bible isn't ? Give me a fucking break here ! Darwin's theory have been proven true again and again by scientists specialized in a lot of different fields like paleontology, genetics, geology and the list goes on and on. Pushing all these evidences aside and swallowing a fairytale about humans being created from clay is completely insane. And imposing that crap to children IS dogmatic.

12. Mostly American - but pockets elsewhere - U.K and Australia - however
so far it is only in the U.S. where there has been any concerted effort to put creationism into public schools.
