Book Unflattering to Bush Draws His Campaign's Fire (Blacklist Kelley)

Anticipating a barrage of unflattering accusations and innuendo about President Bush's personal life in a soon-to-be-published book by the celebrity biographer Kitty Kelley, the Bush campaign has opened a wave of advance counterstrikes intended to undermine her credibility.

A representative of the White House recently called Neal Shapiro, president of NBC News, to discourage that network from broadcasting interviews with Ms. Kelley about the book on its "Today'' program and on its MSNBC cable program "Hardball With Chris Matthews,'' a network executive said.

The Republican Party distributed a memorandum this week to conservative radio talk show hosts listing tawdry, unproved assertions in Ms. Kelley's previous books, especially her biography of Nancy Reagan. And Ed Gillespie, the party chairman, sent a letter to supporters portraying her book as a tool of the Democrats' campaign.

"This book is fiction and deserves to be treated as such,'' said Christine Iverson, a Republican spokeswoman.

Any guesses as to who the "representative of the WH is" who's been putting pressure on NBC? Does the name ROVE sound familiar? Wonder what kind of threats he made. Interesting to note that the network publicized these attempts at censorship and coersion.

NBC knows a ratings grabber when it sees one. Hope they don't back down. This is one book everyone will be talking about.

Larry King is refusing to book Kitty Kelley on his show according to the New York Daily News.

KITTY SMELLS A RAT AT CNN

"...Scandal impresario Kitty Kelley is suggesting that CNN's Larry King won't let her on his show to promote her upcoming book, "The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty," because he's a toady of the Bush family.

"I realize how important the Bushes are to Larry," Kelley E-mailed me. "He does not want to lose their friendship or offend them in any way. And having me on his show would probably anger the family, because they made their feelings clear from the beginning ... when the former President Bush called my publisher and said he did not want this book written and would not cooperate in any way. So I certainly understand Larry's refusal to book me."

King couldn't be reached for comment yesterday..."

12. We're right to have mixed feelings

this is Bush's own "politics of personal destruction" coming back to haunt him. I'm not going to buy the book. I think Kelley's biographies are trash. (admittedly, I've never read one...so I'm veering into O'Reillyesque hypocrisy -- he didn't see F 9-11 but condemned it anyway). Yet I know her exposure will get to those people who just don't pay attention to anything else. They don't go to political boards. They don't watch the news or read newspapers. But they'll pickup on Kelley's more sensationalistic Bush stories. She's reaching an audience we don't. They don't care about lies about WMD. Or tax breaks for the rich. But they'll snort up the cocaine stories and the dissolute youth tales. So....I'm conflicted.
