WASHINGTON -- Republican House leaders expressed confidence Wednesday that they will be able to extend three popular tax cuts that are set to expire at the end of this year.
However, GOP lawmakers conceded they still had to work out a number of sticky details that derailed an effort to pass the measures before Congress went on its extended summer break.
A deal to extend the measures for two years evaporated in July when the Bush administration insisted Congress should approve keeping the tax breaks on the books for another five years.
A group of moderate Senate Republicans had insisted on the shorter time frame as a way to keep the tax extensions from having a bigger impact on the soaring budget deficit.
