WaPost: "U.S. Troops' Death Rate Rising in Iraq."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A6756-2004Sep8.html

The wide geographic dispersion of the violence reflects the strength of a resurgent opposition and also frames the challenge U.S. commanders face in the coming months as the United States seeks to hold an election to establish a new Iraqi government, said military officers and defense analysts.

"The 'peace' has been bloodier than the war," said Capt. Russell Burgos, an Army reservist who recently returned from a tour of duty with an aviation regiment in Balad, Iraq. In his view, the U.S. experience in Iraq is coming to resemble Israel's painful 18-year occupation of parts of southern Lebanon.
<snip>
"Sadly, the 1,000th military death is but a bookmark on a longer and more painful road," said retired Army Lt. Col. Carlo D'Este, a historian specializing in World War II. As in the Vietnam War, he said, "there is no visible light at the end of the tunnel, nor has the Bush administration articulated a viable exit strategy, without which the war will continue indefinitely -- that is, years."

_____

This is a bleak picture of what is happening in Iraq. The military seems at a loss to find a way to change the direction things are heading.

1. March and November of '03 had the highest death rates to date.
Why understate the obvious?

" It might take days, perhaps months, but by no means longer than months!!" - Reich Marshal Rumsfeld.

5. Tell me again how this ain't like Viet Nam at all.
Please come back and reassure me like you did in the Summer of '03. I need to hear again how Iraq has absolutely no parallels to Viet Nam.

Anybody?

6. Sadly, though, the American public......
won't register this information yet. As long as it doesn't directly affect them they don't care. They'll vote for the idiot who resides in the WH now and then a little while down the road when they're asked to give up their sons and daughters, then they'll start questioning it. I've given up on the average American's involvement in our democracy. They think they've "done" something if they vote once every 4 years. They don't have any independent thinking skills and are lazy citizens.
